Does anyone know what years the Black Rocks were manufactured by Emmons. I'm guessing in the 70's

Nic, My mate has one and I am sure he has had it from the 70's. I'll check with him but others will chide in I think before I get to ask him. |

The Emmons Black Rock model guitar did indeed come out in the late 70's just before the first LeGrande guitars were introduced. I remember Clem Schmitz stocking them in his Mpls. store, and we all thought the were a fine instrument, especially as a step-up between the student model and the professional series guitar. I personally spent many an hour on both the 'Rock and SG-10 Student models giving lessons to some of the players in the area at the time and was always amazed at how, eventhough some of the more refined accouterments of the pro guitars were absent on those models that they still sounded and played like an Emmons. Pound for pound probably the best low and mid-line guitars ever available to date, imho.
Thanks for the thread, Nick.
sincerely,
Mike Cass

I bought one of theses new back in the 70`s mine had 3x4 and IMHO still the best student model ever made, it had the same changer as the pro steels sounded as only an Emmons can and played great.

Can anyone expand on the major differences between the GS-10 and the Black Rock? Also remember them from the late '70s - early '80s at the Emporium in Minneapolis. |

Jack, as I recall the main difference in the GS-10 and BR-10 was the polished end plates. They also had adjustable legs and a small wood neck. Depending on what was in stock you might have regular small button Kluson keys instead of the plastic button keys. They usually had 4 knees instead of one on the GS. Of course special orders were available too. They were great guitars, I wish I could find one today. Light weight and push pull tone.

Doug,
Thanks for that information. Would it then be correct to assume that the Black Rock is basically a cross between the GS-10 and a Pro Model? And could it be that the reason they sound so good is that both the Black Rock and the GS-10 use the bolt-on changer?

Yes, the BR-10 was a step up from the GS model. They both have push-pull changers mounted to the body. Because of the shorter pillow mounts they had almost zero cabinet drop. Many Pro's played them. I would if I had one! _________________ Emmons D-10, ST-10,LD-10 III, NV-112,Fender Deluxe Reverb. Authorized wholesale dealer musicorp.com! |

The 8 string psg that Emmons made was essentially a black rock model. No difference other than number of strings and the set up being with four pedals.
Example of a typical 8 string.....

I recently traded for this S-8 Black Rock. Havent had a chance to clean it up but it plays and sounds great. Only one knee but I have two more knee kits that I plan to install. During that mod I plan to move the pedals to the left where they should be.
