This amp, with the 15" speaker, is similar to the modded Super Reverb that Tom Brumley used (except for the lack of onboard reverb). At 40-odd watts it would be a bit underpowered for pure cleans, but the tone would likely be outstanding and there should be enough bottom end to give you a well-rounded sound. If the price is right for you, grab it. It's pre-CBS era as well, which many consider the holy grail era of Blackfaces. The Concert, being left over from the Brownface era, didn't really have a place when the Super Reverb came along, so it got phased out after '64. I always thought these BF Concerts were a cool, quirky part of Fender's amp history. _________________ Jackson Steel Guitars

Many folks feel the brown Concert is the best sounding amp Fender ever made. |

I'm one of them....I replaced my '64 BF Concert with a '62 Brownface and gigged it with a '63 Gent for years.Still have both.

If you are using a single speaker in that BF Concert, as pictured, you should change out the output transformer to one that is the correct impedance for the 15" speaker. Perhaps this has already been done? |

The amp in the photo above appears to have a 4x10" baffle, but all of the brown Concert amps I have ever seen were shipped from the factory with 8-ohm 15" speakers installed. Presumably Fender put the appropriate OT in to start with... |

We have had very different experiences, Dave. I think I've seen a dozen of these, and have never seen one that didn't have four tens. Odd. |

Fender Pro's had a single 15, but otherwise were the same as a Concert, aside from the OT. Talking brown and BF era amps. |

I'm fairly sure the brownface Super,Pro,Concert, combo and piggy-back Bandmasters, and Vibrasonic had the same 2-6L6 chassis, and varied only in cabinet height,OT and speaker configuration. All the brownface Concerts I've seen except one(many years ago) had 4-10s.That one had a 15 and stock grillcloth,so it could have been factory, but I've never heard of a run of 15" Concerts-although I'd VERY much like to hear more.BTW,the 4-10 Bassman,Concert and Super/Reverb amps were wired @2 ohms. |

I've certainly not seen that many, and goodness knows I've been mistaken before...the half-dozen or so Concert amps I have seen over the years have all been working amps used by steel, harmonica, or guitar players, most have been loaded with JBL D130f speakers, and the others had mystery 15" drivers. I have apparently never seen an original 4x10" unit ever... |

4 10" speakers are often wired series-parallel to be 8 ohms, same as a single speaker. You wire each pair in series, treating 2 speakers as a single 16 ohm load. Then you connect the two pairs in parallel and you're back to 8 ohms.
4x10 can use the same transformer as 1x15. It's my understanding, though, that the old Fender Concert 4x10 amps actually had a 2 ohm transformer for parallel speaker wiring.
The amp in question is not a brownface, btw. _________________ -𝕓𝕆𝕓- (admin) - Robert P. Lee - Recordings - Breathe - D6th - Video |
