If the steel is dying, as so many people seem to think, why are we seeing new builders? And why are we seeing new amps being made just for us? _________________ Please visit my web site and Soundcloud page and listen to the music posted there.

Mike.. good question, but I think my answer will be reasonable..
There's money to be made. Seen the price of those custom built amps, and gorgeous pedal steels??.
Remember, pedal steel players WILL spend money. We tend to be a pretty intelligent, resourceful, and talented group of musicians. Most of us work and have a buck to spend. We will spend the money to buy these high end steel guitars, amps and accessories.
Its a small market , yes, but these guys are making decent money, or they wouldn't be in business, and all the start ups indicate that there is some decent return to be had for the effort.
The steel guitar world is a fraternity.Word gets around.. If a person starts building a guitar that really works, and is priced right, we all know about it quickly.. I think there is some small growth in the business and new players are helping out by buying "stuff", but IMHO, I think the majority of steels and amps are bought by established players that are within the "fraternity"..
I think people love the instrument, I think it will be around a long time, but I personally don't think its growing by leaps and bounds,, Pedal steel is NOT dead, its not on life support, but its middle aged and growing older... like most of its players... bob _________________ I'm over the hill and hittin'rocks on the way down!

Heck, I am 71 and just bought a PSG a few months ago and am trying to learn to play it. Always loved country music (play a guitar in a little country band)and finally decided I wasn't getting any younger and better get started if I was ever going to learn to play the PSG. Am having a great time and a lot of fun. Don't ever give up!! |

It's not dying. It's evolving, as is the music it's being used to play. Look at all the new players on this forum looking for advice. I respectfully disagree it's not dying. Just changing. _________________ Just 'cause I look stupid, don't mean I'm not. |

I know a bunch of new players under 35 around here.
There is plenty of interest among younger folks. _________________ Joe Savage
