I've seen all the YouTube videos and heard the two albums under his name that I was able to find, but what else is out there on Scotty? Who knows his story? And why do I keep having to inform good musicians of his mind boggling abilities with a guitar?

The band leader/singer I'm working for now John Thomas "Fish" Herbert says he gave him his first band job when he was 16 years old, in the Cincinnati area.

From what John has said, they were playing at a bar on the Kentucky side.

From what I understand, he loves his wife and children, his life and home, and just doesn't have the burning desire towards "stardom" that makes you willing to forgo all that for more recognition. He's also a devout Christian, which makes many (or most?) of the gigs in between "your back porch" and "Carnegie Hall" much less appealing. You don't have to look any further than Roy Buchanan and Danny Gatton to get your "music lesson", unfortunately.

Yup, people I know in Cincy tell me that he is happy doing what he's doing. I think that attitude is realistic and completely refreshing. And, as Dave says, the experience of similar Tele players like Roy Buchanan and Danny Gatton going into the mainstream isn't exactly great, to say the least.

So sure, Scotty's not a household name. But the underground of guitar players is pretty well aware of his abilities, thanks in part to his Hot Licks video from around 20 years ago and recognition by plenty of great players. IMO, any serious guitar player should really get his Hot Licks video. He really has some interesting approaches, both technically and musically.

About 20 years ago I got the chance to pick with Scotty at the Canery in Nashville. It was a Hot Licks show for another great guitarist, Joe Dalton. Arlen Roth was also there. Of all the songs in the world Scotty played "Rollin in my Sweet Babys Arms" at his usual break neck speed. I was amazed how someone like me can inprove instantly with a great musician standing next to you.
After playing with Scotty and Joe the old idea of playing with folks above your level and you'll improve is certainly true. Too bad they aren't always there.

i have played a few gigs with him on elec bass.

scotty has incredible skill on the guitar. i think he is happy just flying under the radar. maybe he slogged it out for a while trying to make the big time and got tired of that game.

i can tell you this. anything you hear him play on a record. he can play more live!!
