I finally got a Mesa Studio Pre today.
First impression is, that it sounds thick, fat and starts to distort before I could get a strong signal to record direct with my Steinberg UR22!
Thought I could get more easily a clear strong steel sound with it!
What's the secret??

| Make sure you're using the rhythm channel. Should be able to get a clean tone for days through it. Great preamp to say the least! |

Paul Franklin recorded an awful lot of clean stuff with one, but I'm willing to bet he also had it tweaked to the nth degree to do just that. The first thing to do would be replace some or all of the preamp 12ax7 tubes with lower-powered, cleaner 12au7's, 12ay7's, 12at7's, 5751's...
There's a ton of online information, but I'd find a good "amp guy" before any tinkering. You could even try asking Paul, if you're not shy.
