Just wanted to display a picture of my beautiful "new" Sho-Bud that I just got done refurbishing. I think she's prettier than the day I bought her in 1975. New lacquer finish courtesy of John Allison at Allison Guitars. Beautiful! Special thanks go out to all of the Sho-Bud experts for parts, advice, and encouragment: James Morehead, Ricky Davis, Jeff Surratt and the nice folks at Steel Guitar Nashville. Couldn't have done it without you. Thanks to all of you!

Wow! Looks like you could swim laps in that lacquer! You need a sign that says "no diving allowed". And good timing - I finished stripping parts off my Sho-Bud last night, getting started on a refurb. _________________ Bringing steel guitar to the bukid of Negros Oriental! |

My favorite, rope binding and round front
Any under carriage pics to post Nice work Marty. I have a 75 Pro III custom square front green that may get a treatment someday but it's original and clean. My original guitar from back then. |

very nice finish!!
i have a question about spraying the lacquer. i have only refinished one steel (an emmons) and wonder how many coats of clear are recommended to prevent chipping and to protect the lacquer. the wood emmons has sharp edges which i've gotten a few little chips from bumping into something (in ten years!)
i recall old zb's had a really tough finish and looked beautiful. |

Wow - Marty, that is beautiful...my Williams will look OK on stage opening for you in Portland next week - it pretty much emulates the Sho-bud look- but yours is classic.. _________________ https://www.lostsailorspdx.com

That's what my Bud is SUPPOSED to look like!
It's had a few too many nights out on the road (not by me, but the previous owner) to look that purty. But that's okay!

Marty, This is a real beauty.I loved the look and the sound of those guitars.I am sure their clasical tone will echo down through the ages to come. Every best wish and success with this wonderful instrument. It would be nice , if now possible, to see what it looked before restoration.YOURS AYE JAMES TAYLOR SCOTLAND |

Hey guys thanks for all of the pats on the back. I think it turned out pretty nice. I did fail to mention one of the people that helped me (I knew that would happen!) and that is Jim Flynn over in Salado, TX. He helped out with redoing the rollers and polishing the *%#@ out of the head stock. Thanks Jim!
As for the comments/questions:
Ricky I can't promise I'll always be behind the old Sho-Bud but I am down to just that guitar and the '65 Emmons so it'll be one or the other.
Lynn- I will try to find some pics of the underside but it isn't quite so pretty. I did clean it up pretty good so I'll see if I can find some and put them up here.
Chris-I really don't know the ins and outs of spraying lacquer finishes. That's why I took it to John because he's INTO IT. He really knows his stuff when it comes to finishing guitars. I considered doing it myself and I'm really glad I changed my mind. I believe they put somewhere in the area of 5 coats on but I'm not positive.
Michael if you could see what that guitar looked like before it was redone you wouldn't believe it. BAD! It looked like an old mangy dog. The lacquer was all cracked and chipping away and getting yellow and milky looking. Ugly! I will see if I have some pictures that show how bad it was. Not sure if I do because it wasn't very photogenic. It sure is now!
Steve—It was a pleasure to meet you and hear you play in Portland the other night. Great job! Much thanks for letting me try out your Milkman amp. I really liked it from the little I played through it. Anyway, I hope I see around again sometime soon.
I'll see if I can find some more pics. Thanks guys. |
