I find myself doing this from time to time. Am I a bad boy?

I do it too. Mostly if I play the 9th string along with any combination of strings 3,4,5,6 and want to mute only string 9 and maybe slide the others to a different fret or maybe activate the A & B pedals.

I remember Bo saying in a topic that he blocked with his bar hand thumb by pushing the bar away from him across the string with his thumb in front of the bar and the with the middle finger of the bar hand by pulling the bar back toward him with his middle finger sticking past the bullet end of the bar.

Paul said he didn't use that in his pick blocking method, but only used it if he wanted to make his steel sound like a marimba.

Well needless to say Bo’s pick blocking plus method went down hill from there.
So I joined in on the fun

Although I would not recommend using that technique regularly, what really matters is the sound and how well you play. If'n it heps you - go fer it. Oh Well

I'm guilty. I ocasionaly block the 8th-10th strings with my bar hand thumb. I beleive Jeff Newman also used that tecnique(sp) from time to time.

Thumb blocks when you push forward and middle finger blocks when you pull back.
Bo uses this with his pick blocking. He almost never palm blocks.

Stuart, that looks exactly like my hand. LOL! The only way I can block strings 1 & 2 is with my bar hand middle finger just like in your picture. I also bend my first finger up, on top of the bar like your showin. I was told by a local steel player that it gives you better control of the bar. But, I ain't quite got that bar control masterd yet. Oh Well

Looks like Bo's fingers are backwards. Does he have weird fingernails or something?

I see nothing wrong with this picture, though I will not divulge how my privates configure into my blocking scheme, either.

Laughing Laughing
I can't post the picture of Bo's middle finger he gave me. Laughing
So I searched thru the archives and blew up a little section of an image. As you can see it's pretty much like my Rembrandt sketch.
