I have noticed on live recordings of steel players, myself included, that sometimes the guitar is very slightly off pitch. I attribute it to large stages, poor stage monitoring, loss of hearing, etc.
Would like to hear from steel players who are using in ear monitors to help play in pitch. I was thinking about keeping a small headphone amp in my rack and feeding the acoustic guitar and steel into one ear only. Any thoughts on this or other suggestions to help play in pitch?.. thanks

One ear only can damage your hearing from what I understand. And yes in ear monitors can really help with pitch. I have heard plenty live recordings where my intonation sounds just awful to me. It can be a nightmare trying to play in tune in many situations.

Yes, good monitors.
I think helps to have one instrument in the mix, perhaps acoustic guitar or piano to serve as the reference for pitch.
I played terribly out of tune on a session because they only put bass and drums in my mix. I've realized I have pitch trouble with low register instruments. It wasn't at all obvious until a vocal and guitar were added later.
