I took this screen shot of Pete Drake (with coffee cup) from a short doc about Dylan's new release of outtakes from '69-'71: http://vimeo.com/72494889

Pretty cool shot. Between his work with Dylan and Harrison during this period, Pete was right at the epicentre of some serious rock history. This was all in the midst of his heavy contributions to country music. Busy man indeed. Apologies if this photo has already been circulated here.

Looks pretty light-hearted and laid-back for a Dylan session, hey Skip?

Here's the wide shot if that helps any. I assume they're background singers. Could the blonde girl be Carol Montgomery? I assume many here could identify her if it were, given the extensive number of vocal sessions she did in Nashville during that era.

(Correct me if I'm wrong) Re: Chris LeDrew photo - I have Charlie McCoy, unidentified, Bob Dylan, Pete Drake, Fred Carter, Jr.?, Arleen Harden? (Arleen Harden not listed in the Heylin sessionography but a Columbia artist in 1969), Dottie Dillard. Pete Drake was on the "Self Portrait" sessions at Columbia Music Row on April 24, 26 and May 3, 1969. The background singers listed are June Page, Dolores Edgin, Carol Montgomery, Millie Kirkham, & Dottie Dillard.

Here's another shot where you can see it's Dottie (right over Kershaw's fiddle):

Here is Carol Montgomery (2nd from left):

Robert, there are far more girl singers mentioned in the credit list of "Self Portrait" than you said.
On "New Morning" there are only three: Albertine Robinson, Hilda Harris and Maretha Stewart (all black women). Funny (at least for me) that they were also included on "Self Portait".
These two records are from different worlds, when I listen to them.

Joachim - In an effort to ID Chris LeDrew's photo I was naming the Nashville backup singers listed on same the 3 dates Pete Drake is listed on. The backup singers you mentioned were on three March 1970 Columbia NYC sessions for "Self Portrait" and as you said on some "New Morning" sessions in June 1970.

I am using "Bob Dylan - The
Recording Sessions [1960-1994]" Clinton Haylin 1995 which is not to say it's infallible.

Easy to geek on this stuff. Until today - I never realized Sam Lay was on some "Highway 61" sessions only 4 days after Newport.

robert, please excuse my ignorant curiosity, but can you ID the other three people in the Carol Montgomery photo?

Thanks.

Thanks Robert. Now I understand that "Self Portrait" was a mixture of recordings made in New York City and Nashville.

Chris - The blonde session singer could possibly be Arleen Harden. (It is not Dolores Edgin as I originally thought it was) Arleen was on Columbia 1967-1973. I'm still not sure but here is a Arleen on Hee Haw and a 1975 Columbia LP cover.

Hee Haw circa 1970 "Lovin' Man (Oh Pretty Woman)" (Self Portrait sessions are 1969)

Michael Maddex - So far I've only been able ID Bergen White (far right) in the Carol Montgomery photo.

robert, thank you for going to the trouble. The one on the right is the one I was curious about. He is a dead ringer for a guy I grew up with. I can't imagine he was recording without me hearing about it, but you never know. Again, thanks.

The gent on the right in the first shot is definitely Fred Carter Jr.

I worked with him at his recording studio in the early 70's

robert,
Thanks for providing that historic photo. Few people would recognize Bob Dylan, then 27, with Dottie Dillard, Doug Kershaw, and the rest of the gang in the studio.

Thanks Chris for the original post, and thanks Robert - your detective work is invaluable once again.

Can't wait to hear Another Self Portrait, which is being released down under tomorrow!

Lloyd Green was kind enough to take the time to send me the names of the personnel in the photos above:

Quote:
The blonde to the left of Pete Drake and Fred Carter, Jr. (guitarist) is Delores Edgin. The person with his back to the camera in the enlarged shot is not Charlie McCoy; too heavy. Without a facial shot, it’s impossible to tell.

The background singers shot around the microphone are, L-R: Buzz Cason, Carol Montgomery, (Ricky) June Page, and Bergen White.

Interesting times, those days in Nashville.

Regards,

Lloyd Green

Chris and Lloyd. Excellent work IDing these photos. Thanks very much! This also matches the musicians listed in the Heylin sessiongraphy. (Arleen Harden was not listed on these dates - Dolores Edgin is)

Here is Dolores (on the right) as we all know her:
