Hello everyone

I just bought a AWH Custom Viking Pedal Steel. It's a good pedal steel for beginners, but the tuning pegs are very bad. My question is what pegs that can fit to my pedal steel? I have uploaded a picture so you can see what it is all about.

I look forward to hearing from you.

All the best

Bjorn

Hello Bjørn!

Looks just like the one I had in the late seventies, could be the very same guitar!

My guess is that something like these would fit – take measurements and compare!

Similar cheap tuners sholuld be available in almost any music store. Finding really good quality tuning machines with that mounting screw pattern would probably be tricky, though.

I see a couple of problems with changing out the tuners to higher quality sealed tuners. First of all the better tuners have a larger shaft than what is on the guitar. You will need to drill out the existing holes in order for the shaft to fit the headstock. Yow will also likely need to drill a new screw hole or 2 for each tuner. Another possible problem is that it doesn't appear that you have much room between the bottom of the headstock and the top of the guitar. It's hard to say for certain, but you may not have enough clearance for a sealed tuner.

If it were me and the tuners were tight I would try a drop of machine oil on the gears. If the tuners are toast, the best bet, imho, would be to find an exact replacement for what is on there. In my experience it has been unusual to find that a poor quality tuner is the culprit when a guitar, steel or otherwise, won't stay in tune. Good luck with this.

Being familiar with the Viking, I would say it's not worth the money or trouble investing in 10 high-end tuners, which would also require modifying the headstock as Howard points out.

For those who haven't seen a Viking before, this Swedish-built steel in veneered plywood is a bit like a Maverick (with slightly better quality and finish), a simple 3 pedal/1 lever design that can only raise OR lower a string. It's set up with A, B and C pedals, plus a knee lever lowering string 8. But since there's a C pedal, you can't lower the fourth string, which is a major limitation – that was why I traded mine for a pro 3+6 model after two years.

At the StewMac site you can click on the 'specs' tab and take all the guess-work out whether replacement tuners will fit.

Bjorn, also consider number of wraps. If you fail to properly wrap those strings, they could and most likely will give you fits!
