There's a thread in this "Music" section regarding a young black country music artist whom is competing on the television show, "America's Got Tallent". That thread got me to thinking about a somewhat forgotten black country artist.
In his all-too-short career (approx. 1971 to 1981; one album was released in 1991) Stoney Edwards made some great music. For those that don't know, Stoney's career declined for two reasons: His poor health and a song named "Blackbird" that contained a controversial lyric with the 'N' word. He died in 1997.
IMO, Stoney Edwards should be as legendary as Charley Pride... or any other big-name honky-tonker... 'just sayin'....

Totally agree, Glenn. I was in the employ of Ray Sweeney (see link) playing with another band when Ray brought Stoney to everyone's attention. We backed him up on many occasions just before he signed with Capitol and "Two Dollar Toy" became a hit. A finer guy and better country singer would be hard to find.

| Oh yea, one of my all time favorite artists that either no one had ever heard of, and/or who had too short of a career. When one of his hits came out in 1980, "One Bar At A Time", my band members and I at the time, agreed we had to cover that song. I remember very well, going out and buying that 45 record, so I could learn the steel licks. And what an appropriate song to do in all the wild bars I was playing in! I remember seeing him on the country TV shows a few times. I really liked him, he had a unique voice and style. |

My country singing group "Tumblin'Creek" had the priviledge of being part of a benefit show back in the 80's for Stoney at Billy Bob's in Fort Worth!
There's NOT a "BETTER" or "MORE COUNTRY" song...than
"HANK AND LEFTY RAISED MY COUNTRY SOUL!"

You're right! O.B. was ANOTHER good one! He and I wrote a song he recorded on EPIC called "American Soul!
I still miss O.B.! We lost him way too soon! He was a very talented singer AND writer...and didn't really get the credit he deserved for the talent he had!
