was $875 now $825+ shipping.

This extremely rare single neck 8 National 1010 Special Hawaiian Guitar was recently serviced, cleaned and set up at Truetone Music in Santa Monica. It plays and sounds great. The tuner knobs were replaced at the same time.

The original tuning buttons are in the plastic bag.

I've had a few requests for a price but I don't know what the price would be. There is virtually nothing available on the web *about* this particular guitar and there are no comps in terms of prices on eBay or anywhere else from what I can see. So if anyone is interested in this, you probably know more than me what it's worth and I'll consider any reasonable offers that are made, for money or towards an excellent D-10 Emmons guitar.

"Reasonable" is a difficult concept. Believe me, I understand your position. Most folks want a price. You have a very cool, and interesting steel, and you want a good return for your investment. That is, a reasonable dollar for your instrument. But, it sounds like an auction in your present way of speaking. Auctions don't fare well here. Please don't misunderstand my comments. I'd love to have this steel, it's very hard to know what to expect.

Email Gruhn? Or, look in the Electric Guitar Bluebook? Maybe ask Jim Palenscar?

Not sure what it's worth, but I think I saw a double neck of the same style a while back on the forum or ebay for sale.
Can't remember the price but think that one was around $700.00 give or take a bit?
Cowboy Copas had a steel player who had a D-8 like that in a picture I saw once....
That's my 2¢ worth.

As it happens, at this very moment on eBay someone's selling a '51 double-neck (considerably more of them around apparently than single necks) with an opening price of $1350. (http://www.ebay.com/itm/National-double-8-neck-lap-steel-1951-/290910022365?pt=Guitar_Accessories&hash=item43bb96aadd) Another one sold for 1400 and change. (and one sold for $232. Didn't read the details...) But these are double-necks; there are about 10 of 'em on eBay. But nowhere can I find anything about the single neck version. Not saying it's worth much, just that I don't know.

Yeah, four years, and we're in a down market I'm told. Interesting thread. There is always something to learn and good ideas here in the forum. Thanks.

Hi Nick,
I have no idea the real value of vintage instruments and am often surprised at what some of them get these days.
Whatever the value, The guitar is very cool indeed!
I also came across a guy on youtube showing off his almost same model.

I bought a twin neck version of this in what I'd call very good (but not excellent) condition here in Austin during SXSW this year. I started watching them on ebay and they fetched about 700 or so there. I've seen several with a buy now price of over 1000, but they're not selling. I saw a triple neck with black fretboards like yours for about 1300. I haven't seen a single neck yet, but I've only been watching since I got mine. Some of these have pickup issues. That would be a bigger concern than the tuning pegs for me. My twin neck had no legs, and gets a little heavy in my lap. What types of items were you looking to trade for? I'm afraid evaluating this thing from a $$ perspective is going to be difficult and seems to be a classic "worth what somebody will pay for it" situation.

Indeed. Because ebay and the world is lousy with double-necks but nary a single-neck. A search of "National 1010 Special 8 Hawaiian" turns up two hits, with one of them having nothing to do with the guitar and the other depicting it but giving the wrong year for it. I guess the market is screwy, and the classic valuation method is fully in play but ... if scarcity has any value this one appears to attend the school of hen's teeth.
