I've been lurking here for awhile , and I finally bought my 1st lap steel, a 50s era Oahu Tonemaster. I'm just a beginner, but I love the tone; I'm playing it through a Digitech RP155 and a Braven lap top speaker for practicing. I'm working through the Scott C6 instruction book; if you guys have any other suggestions I'd like to hear them.

I have a question about the nut on the Oahu. Mine has a clear plastic nut, with a nail holding it to the fretboard. I've seen descriptions of the Oahu having a bone nut. Do you think the plastic nut was added by a previous owner? The tone is great; do you think it would be worth replacing it with a bone nut?

Thanks for the forum; it's great resource for beginners like me.

Welcome to the forums Tony! Smile

My best guess is that someone probably did replace it somewhere along the way. I'd say that as long as it sounds good and is playing fine, then there is no urgent need to change it out at this time.

Welcome, Tony.

I have the Scott book, and it's great . . . BUT, for my money, what helped me learn the most was forum member Doug Beaumier's C6 books. I have both and they're absolutely wonderful. They're not so much instruction books as they are song books. They'll have you playing real songs in no time.

Thanks guys. I think I will leave the nut alone for now. When my playing improves, I might consider an "upgrade."

I just now ordered the Beaumier book; thanks for the suggestion. I learned guitar and uke thru songbooks, it's a fun way to pick up the basics and get comfortable with the technique

Tony, Thanks for ordering my lap steel book/CDs. Much appreciated! I will ship it tomorrow morning.

Steve, thanks for mentioning my books! I'm glad you like them.

As far as the nut on the Tonemaster... I don't think it's original to the guitar. I've seen a lot of Tonemasters and they all had a smaller white nut, probably a bone nut in that era. If the guitar plays well and the nut is not an issue I would just leave it as is for now.

It should look like this one. The string thru pickups are very good sounding and strong pickup.
