Not sure which category this falls into...
There is a theory that the change from 432 Hz to 440 Hz was dictated by Nazi propaganda minister, Joseph Goebbels. He used it to make people think and feel a certain manner, and to make them a prisoner of a certain consciousness. Then around 1940 the United States introduced 440 Hz worldwide, and finally in 1953 it became the ISO 16-standard.

Actually, the first pedal steels were brought into the US by German agents in U-boats just of the coast of NY, Florida, and possibly Cape Hatteras, as a means to sabotage American morale. This is the original use of the term "cabinet drop".
As a side note, later in the war, in a last-ditch effort to forestall invasion, the Japanese sent balloons laden with banjos across the Pacific to drop on the West Coast. Fortunately, few ever reached populated areas. |

Y'know, Ron, I just checked that on Snopes and they say it's true. _________________ www.JimCohen.com

I remember hearing a story that German sound techs used to "tweak" certain frequencies on the PA systems used in big Nazi rallies in an attempt to excite people and increase their emotional responses.
Sound system frequencies are also measured in Hz.
I asked a respected history professor who specialized in studying German politics of the 19th and 20th century if he had ever heard of this and he told me he hadn't and that Hitler didn't need tweaking the sound to excite Germans back then. Sorry if this is going off topic but love to read this kind of stuff. Best wishes, Walter _________________ Emmons S10, p/p, Nashville 112, Zion 50 tele style guitar, Gibson LP Classic w/Vox AC30, Fender Deluxe De Ville and a Rawdon-Hall classical |

OK, so suppose that I tune to 432, while the rest of the band tunes 440. Will there be world peace? |

There is also a conspiracy theory that the atonal music of Anton Webern (1883-1945), which sounds fairly random to the untrained ear (and even to some pretty well trained ears) despite being obsessively organized, was actually coded information being delivered for the Nazis. No: I didn't make that up.
Don't know Webern's music? here's a sample:

This is not music I listen to for pleasure, but it carries a certain conceptual weight and a beauty of its own. It lacks twang, though.

Dan,
Some of the really short Webern pieces are pretty great... like Opus 11 #2. It clocks in at about 27 seconds and is a cool, complete, musical thought. |

Mike,
When I was an undergrad, pre CDs(oy weh!), all of Webern's music fit on 3 LPs. Yup: some pretty short pieces there! I like some of it; not all of it.

3 octaves below 440 Hz lies the bass A1 note at 55 Hz.
Some of the world's electrical systems use 60 Hz AC current, some use 50 Hz. A1 at 55 Hz is right in the middle. They say music is the universal language. Coincidence?
The difference between the 60 Hz and 50 Hz systems sets up a 10 Hz electromagnetic wave on a global scale. Notice that Saudi Arabia uses 60 Hz while all of its neighbors use 50 Hz. Could the 10 Hz difference wave be contributing to the political unrest in the region?

I'm old enough to remember when electricty, or hydro as it is called in Ontario, was 25~. People were really ticked when they had to buy or alter their stuff. _________________ Bill |
