As correctly stated at the start of the thread, this appears to be a Tonealigner pickup, which is built by Bob Hofner now I believe. It is my understanding that they were originally built by Danny Shields, then Jim Pitman, and are now built by Bob.

Telonics designs and manufacturers fifteen (15) steel guitar pickup models, including Type 84PW, 84PN and Type 409PW and 409PN.

I think the tonealigner was the original humbucker for steel with adjustable poles. I have 3 of them - one in each of my steels. Can't go wrong with one of these!

This is one of Bob Hofner's adjustable Tonealigner's, the 409 AND 84 are both made by Telonics I.E, Mr, Dave Beaty who chimed in earlier Smile,

Mark,
The Type 409 resembles the Type 84 in appearance and is generally described as one of the most well-balanced humbuckers ever built. It is a strong pickup with a well-balanced bottom end and clear, clean highs. It can be adjusted to produce "bells and balls" with barbed wire lows. It also provides the ultimate in string separation and clarity, at all volume levels. Every little thing the player does is right out in your face, you can/t hide or get away with anything at all. If you can't play, this is not the pickup for you. If you can play, using this pickup is an absolutely great experience. When properly adjusted, people say that "it makes your steel talk back to you" and "you don't want to stop playing".

These and all Telonics pickups are built under carefully controlled conditions in order to assure uniform and repeatable characteristics from unit-to-unit, with controlled dimensional and structural performance and consistent reliability.

Johnathan,
I can give you precise information regarding the pickups we design and build at Telonics, but I'm sorry that I can't speak to other pickups we don't build and test. You might check with someone who has used them both in the past.

Billy - I'll take that thing. It'll give me a good excuse to drive up there and finally meet you.

Can I go ahead and paypal (or mail) you the money and have you hang onto it until I get a chance to make the drive?

Thanks,
Bill

If I may chime in on the Tonealigner...
On the BenRom, I include this pup along with my own Single coil wound at 14.5K

I for one, love the sound of the Tonealigner.
The man who purchased this guitar (007) Preferred the Tonealigner on this one same as what he is using on Blue(004)
I sent this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XGS8XjTJ6W0&feature=youtu.be
to one of the top players in the world. His assessment, among others, was "great string separation and sustain".
It is Dale Rivard playing

Please note that the pole pieces have not been adjusted.
Listen for yourselves and see what you like what you hear. Note that it was recorded with less than super recording equipment and "studio"..my shop where these steels are built.
I'll just say "thanks Mr Bob Hoffnar"
