Aloha Kakou,
I have been thinking about what a CD of surf tunes played on steel might sound like...so I threw this one together. No fancy playing, (matter of fact, it can all be done with a flatpick...although it wasn't) but I think the mood is right. I don't have a Jazzmaster handy, so my Chandler had to do. Hope you enjoy it. Happy Sunday!

That's a general link to all of the files I have uploaded, and Surfer Girl should be the one on top...let me know if it works for you. |

I got selections this time but still no sound. We'll see if it's good for others, it may just be my end. I like the titles you've chosen! |

David, Surfer Girl makes a great steel guitar piece. You version is vaguely reminiscent of Santo and Johhny. Loved it. One of these days I am going to try Honolulu Lulu. _________________ Don't go in the water after lunch. You'll get a cramp and drown. - Mother. |

Mahalo guys...I'm glad you enjoyed it! Yeah, listening to it again, I can see where it might say Santo and Johnny to you....I've saved the steel guitar channel strip for future use, as I think I'm going to be using this again. It would be interesting to see how the Stringmaster owuld sound on this track, but I'm just too lazy to get it out of the case and set it up...the Chandler is always just two feet away. Now my mind is working OT on that Surf N Steel CD idea. |

Great recordings. Steel guitar and surf music seems like a natural combination to pursue.

Aloha Kay,
Yes, I've been over at that forum for a while...lurking and so forth, but mostly for guitar. Trying to buck up my courage (and pocketbook) to buy a Jazzmaster.
I know my idea is not an original one, but it's not something I had tried before. It's funny you should respond, because I was talking about this idea last night with another steel guitarist and your name came up. It had to do with figuring out a way to get a whammy bar on a steel, and he suggested converting a Strat to get "that sound" and a whammy bar, and I remembered that you play a Stratsteel.
Maybe we should do some duets via online file share?
Aloha,

Aloha David!
Yes, it would be fun to do a duet! Pick a tune! Will you be at HSGA Joliet this year? I have three CDs featuring Shadows music and you will see samples of the titles here:
http://www.cdbaby.com/Artist/KayDas
Regarding a whammy bar, I believe that is not necessary. A steel guitarist can do what a whammy bar does ( and lots more!) using the steel bar with his or her left hand.
Another note: converting a normal strat to steel would require raising the pups or otherwise the sound is too thin and nowhere near "that sound". I had mine custom built by Bob Littleton of West Coast. I use the bridge pick-up ( position 5) for a Hank Marvin sound ( as he does) and the neck/center pickups ( positions 1,2 and 3) for a bluesy or Mark Knopfler sound.
Let me know how you want to proceed. I have played here at Huntingdon Beach with surf guitarists and it is fun. The steel guitar really complements the surf sound!!!
Keep in touch!

Aloha Kay,
I'll think on some tunes...in the meantime, if you have any that you think might be good, let's have at it. I always think Beach Boys tunes present some really nice melodies...God Only Knows, In My Room, Sloop John B...it's all good. I'll take any suggestions!
No, I won't be at convention this year...I am usually gigging on the ships about eight months out of the year, and the conventions always seem to take place while I am at sea. Some day though...

David,
Yes, one of the Beach Boys tunes might be an idea. I will need to record some acceptable backing and this will take some time. However, we are not up against any deadline.... I live not too far from where The Beachboys first performed and there are several BB admirers here...we have a Saturday morning jam in Huntingdon Beach in which many BB tunes are featured, including the three you mention. "Sloop" is already a vocal jewel to require much instrumentalization, I feel...but the others are worth trying...
Another idea: I am working with some other musicians on a recording ( with bass/rhythm/lead/steel/percussion) of "California Blue" which is a Roy Orbison /Tom Petty/ Jeff Lynne tune but does not want to sound too Hawaiian for the obvious reasons! Most of it is done already with a "surf "sound accentuation, but there may be room for an additional version, if you are interested....
