The old Session 500 was worn out years ago and is now replaced by a NS 1000. I miss the Session's crystal clear sound badly but can't get something nearly close on the NS 1000, no matter how I set the knobs and how many 4 letter words I yell Mad
Any hints on what to do?

You might want to give this a try - it's for sale here on the Forum right now.

Now the 2000 is 24 pounds lighter than the 500, (70 lbs. vs. 94 lbs.) but you can always put a few bricks in the bottom if you miss humping a heavy amp around. Laughing

That nv 2000 ain't no s500
I have most of the Peavey Steel guitar amps but I used the 500 mostly. But since I got this little stomp box I'm not afraid to take any one of my amps to the gig and know it's going to sound good.

I remember Buddy saying that the 500 was a favorite of his. The phase shifter is very nice. Buddy did a spectacular version of "You Are So Beautiful" using that amp with the phase shifter. Barry is right, it has a little weight problem.

I used to get similar results on the gig with either of these two. If you put the booster second in line it would actually boost your simulated talent..

Just bought an older maybe 75-76 Session 400 with the Shallow Basket Black Widow with the Spider on the back...I'm using that next to my Session 500, both running through a Profex ll...I'm loving it, and surpised Surprised at how close that old 400 sounds to my 500, which to me is a very hard amp to beat.

Thanks for all hints! I've tried a large number of EQs and different kinds of boxes to get the Session 500 sound in my NS 1000 but all have failed. I can't understand why there's such a big difference between the two. Maybe the only solution is to get me a second hand 500.

It's like comparing apples to oranges. The 100 has a digital switching amp. The 500 is just a big old transformer. Plus the cabinet on the 100 is more open in the back. Too many variables.

Of the Peavey amps, the 500 was my favorite. The one I had was a lemon and kept breaking down. Was in the shop as much as it was on stage. I am sure it was just my particular amp and not every 500. The sound was to die for. I would love to have another. Before the 500, I used a Session 400 and would rather die than use that amp again. After many trips to the local Peavey repair station, the music store took the 500 back and gave me a new Nashville 400 in exchange. Been using that NV400 since 1984.

In my opinion, the Session 500 is the very best amplifier ever made for the steel guitar.

.....but, it was heavy, and I managed to use it only until about my 80th birthday.

Only until 80? Way too soon to stop using it. Laughing

True, that bad boy was one heavy mother. But, I would still tote one around today if I could afford to buy one somewhere.

I fudged a little in saying I used the 500 until age 80.

Actually, my last use of the 500 was at about age 70, when working staff on a country music theater show. It was a "set-down" job so I left it on the stage between performances. It was so heavy that I didn't think anyone would (or could) steal it, and they didn't.

I hated to let it go but finally sold it and reverted to my stereo-steel rig for the remainder of my working days. It weighed about the same but came in three pieces which made it easier to haul around for an old guy. Sad

I had a Session 500 (original small cabinet model) and agree it was the best Steel Guitar amp that Peavey built.

Put the OPA2134 op amp chip "mod" in the NV1000. It makes a big difference. The chip mod (op amps in the preamp section), in the NV1000 I had (its been sold) made the amp sound almost like my NV112. It didn't sound like an amp with a digital power amp section.

IMO, the 500 had the best tone of all of Peavey's steel amps, with the Session 400 a close second.
