Does everyone use some kind of unit ,such as a reverb etc, along with their pedal steel or does most just play clean;but use steel action vibrato. James Taylor

The stuff you do with your hands has nothing to do with using or not using gizmos. The simple fact is, some use extra gizmos...and some don't. Cool

I believe most common is to use some kind of reverb. Some use delay, some use both. Then there's other, less commonly used effects that might be tossed in, but the usual standard, IMO, is just reverb.

James what amp are you using? most these days have built in reverb eg Nashville 112, or Roland cube 80xl plus many others. If your amp has no reverb there are numerous effect units that will sound good, eg Boss ,Digitech, Behringer (low cost copies of of Boss), Pod etc etc.If you need one I think I have a used Behringer reverb unit, if you want give me a call , think you have my number.

James
The golden rule is not to over-do the amount of reverb or delay that you use. If not, you run the risk of your sound 'swimming' in effects, and thereby losing its definition.

Glad you are a happy camper with your Encore. There are real advantages in having a compact and lightweight guitar for certain circumstances and situations.

I use a Digitech RP155 for reverb (the reverb in my NV400 doesn't work right), an EQ for dobro effect (1 song), a Tech 21 Rotochoir rotary sim on a few songs that the steel guitar sound would "country it up" too much, and distortion/overdrive on some rock stuff ("Keep your hands to Yourself", "Gimme 3 Steps", etc that again, the steel guitar sound would make it sound too country. But most of the time, it's just reverb. And I absolutely hate delay.

James, I run a touch of slap back delay on my signal before the amp. I usually don't use reverb and if I do, just a touch...less is more, for me.

James, for several years I had trouble with the 3rd string (E9th) sounding like banging on a tin can. Delay and reverb, especially reverb helped me in that area.

Thank you Ken, Malcolm and all you lads that have responded to my call. It is just to understand how you all use your steels whether clean or add-ons.Malcolm I have a Peavy Vyper 30 watt and it has reverb although I feel it , being set at one level, is a bit too much and so I do not use it. Thanking you all once again but if there is more inflow I will be well pleased. Yours Aye JAMES TAYLOR

James, you should be able to use the reverb in amp, set your tone to your satisfaction dry without reverb on then gradually add the reverb till you are happy with it.Used a Vypr once to record a track as there was no other amp suitable in studio, used the amps own reverb and it sounded ok.

you have to teweak your tone & volume on the amp & use the vp as an accelerator
otherwise you're supposed to wrench, squeeze, the sound of your steel w: yer hands

Thanks everyone. I think I get the message Crowbear and I'll have another look at the inbuilt reverb on my amp Malcolm, although I felt it was set to standard with no adjustment. However these amps now have all these amp simulations etc perhaps it was a bit over my rusty head.Ken, perhaps Crowbear had some good Red wine? My wife's friend set up a birthday party for her husband and it was a nice quiet afair' When the majority left it was bottles of the very expensive maults-heathery tasted. My wife told me later I had drank a bottle;Docter's orders I'm not to touch the stuff. Well, well that's life! YOURS AYE JAMES TAYLOR SCOTLAND

CrowBear, 5 bits of reverb may be to much.
