you're right. i meant it as a comparison of an existing ok artist to a potentially very good unknown. one pleases my sensibilities while the other made very little effect on it.
i picked out darius because, for some reason...even now in 2013, there are and have been 'very' few african-american country artists. no disrespect intended. i can't keep up with whatever the current acceptable political terminology is...aside from the fact that that is all a bunch of crap. i should have just compared this new kid to 75% of the current singers with all their posing and strutting. |

Thanks for that link Chris, I don't watch the show, but am curious now. Even Howard Stern was moved.
That says a lot.
I agree, he's a great talent, although I do also like Darius in his Hootie days and also his country records, he also has an amazing voice too.

This Milton kid is pretty good, I enjoyed the clip.
Whiskey Lullaby - great song! I think when Jon Randall Stewart and Bill Anderson got together to complete that one which was apparently started by Jon, who had been going through a rough patch in his life, I imagine them saying "there's been a lot of sad country songs throughout history - let's see if we can write one that will be the saddest, most miserable song of all!"
And the Paisley/Krauss version which was a big hit was in B minor - a lot of sad and miserable music has gone down in that key!

Someone has to say this: - As much as I enjoyed Milton - and I really did - he doesn't stand a snowball's chance in hell of making it in the current country music scene. So sad.

i disagree richard. i think you may underestimate the power of tv promoted talent shows. it's instant million dollar advertising for anyone with something of interest to offer, whether it be talent, sob story, cultural/political interest, etc.
even scotty mccreery ridiculously got a #1 album out of it and he's not a very good singer and looks like alfred e. newman.
it's a different ballgame now in the twitterworld.
that doesn't mean i'm happy about it. |

Point well taken but could possibly be countered with the question as to whether the deep pockets that control so-called country music wield more influence than a brief appearance on TV. Based solely upon what we've seen over the last several years, I'd suggest that the folks that control country music will do what they damned well please without being influenced greatly by outside sources.
I'm not pleased, either, but Milton's style does not fit the mold as manufactured by those in control.
Rock-n-roll sells and will prevail regardless of how much you and I jump up and down and scream and holler.
Since my personal influence on the matter is less than nil I can only go elsewhere for my musical jollies.
I do, and will. They won't miss me - or you - or the others in the minority who rebel at the masquerade called "country".

I saw "Marty Brown" on there the other night. Didn't he have a couple of hits in the nineties? It seems like I remember him from Nashville Now and some other things on TNN as well as videos....JH in Va.

i hope someone's got plans for him. they certainly kept many less talented people.
oh well...$how biz.
maybe they'll call him back later in the show as a 'pre-planned' emotional moment. |
