Wow, Baden Powell's guitar playing is so beautiful and in the pocket then the singers come in and completely !@$&*# it all up.

I love Dionne's feel on Bacharach's classic pop tunes but she seems to have no feel for bossa nova on Ipanema, singing way ahead of the beat. Then Sascha Distel comes in sounding like a bad Maurice Chevalier imitator. Ouch. It gets much better when they segue to Felicidade.

Contrast that clip with this one ...

In Dionne's defense, it seems like the quick tempo might make it hard to sing the feel, especially with the English lyrics. Better suited to instrumental rendition. The Getz/Gilberto laid-back tempo is a different matter. I have nothing to say in Distel's defense.

Dionne usually has a superb feel for the pulse. Could be you're right and the tempo just threw her. Youtube dredges up some performances that artists would rather forget. Pat Metheny's commented on how a bad night used to be history but now it all shows up on YouTube. Carlos Santana, somewhat surprisingly, listed Ms. Warwicke as one of the key influences on his guitar phrasing.

I'll agree and make it #3. Baden's simply running away with the song. For Pete's sake, it's a samba, not a breakdown! Confused

I also suspect the key's too high for her, and too low for him. Whoa!
