This guy looks as though he is actually enjoying himself:

How is this possible? I don't know who it is (name?), but he's playing some really great stuff here. (I guess having Martina to accompany you helps Very Happy).

So this is my goal: to play in tune, on the beat with a smile on my face rather than a frown from wondering where the next chord is Confused

How many have reached this elevated state of enlightenment and relaxation? And how many years did it take?

Chris..Check out almost any video of Buddy Emmons performing, he always appeared to be having the time of his life (all of the while playing licks that most of us can only aspire to!)

Chris - Just have fun - not to disagree with Dave, he's right on! Point is you don't have to be Buddy Emmons to have fun. I was messing with the steel just yesterday and the TV was on in the other room and I heard the song. "I Love Lucy". What a great tune! So I played that for awhile. Fun Fun Fun -
It's what YOU make it ! Smile

The problem is that if musicians appear to be enjoying their work, then people think they don't need to be paid too. So it's better to keep your head down and look like you're working really, really hard...

Good point, though I would like to have the option of looking up occasionally, if only to see if anyone is listening. Don't get me wrong, I do have fun, but it probably doesn't look like it to others.

@Don Thanks for putting a name to the face. He's a very tasteful player.

Well, you could rig up some mirrors for that. Don't risk looking up...

I sort of remember someone posting here on the Forum, probably about 10 years ago, something similar to –
“Why do pedal steel players look like they’re agonizing over a math exam when they’re playing?”

Cause they tend to be nit-pickers.

And, it was always worse when I HAD to wear a cowboy hat. All the harassment because people couldn't see my face. Now they all wish I would wear a hat or a mask. Laughing

Wasn't he a little off on the last chord? But I wish I could play as good as him.
Not to criticise only others, here's me having fun:
