I'm from Eastern Canada. We don't have cowboys here like they do in the West, although lots of people like country music.
I'm a long-time guitarist, and new pedal steel player, playing with the first country band I've ever been a part of. We're about to do our first gig, and I wondered if this hat, which is the only thing I own approaching a cowboy hat, would be alright (It's an Indiana Jones hat, a type of fedora):
Any suggestions appreciated!

I'd advise you not to wear it in Texas. |

It never bothered Mark O'Conner and he'd have played in Texas. _________________ Ray Harrison

It all depends on your audience.
I wonder what kind of audience this type of hat would appeal to?

IMO what you have will probably work first time out,but if your band is going to do straight-up country gigs, you'll want to make the investment...BTW,relating back to the thread about image,a cowboy hat(or better still, every band member in a cowboy hat)will help the crowd get in the mood for Jones rather than the Stones |

I have that hat. But I don't wear it on the bandstand because my head gets too hot. |

Mike - You may certainly wear that hat, to the race-track, to the movies, to a job interview, to rob a bank, to a blues bros. concert, anywhere you want, but NOT to play the steel. We have enough of a bad reputation as it is. _________________ Just 'cause I look stupid, don't mean I'm not. |

Good one,Bud!
Mike,
As long as you wear a charcoal-gray bowtie that matches the hatband, you will be OK! A dark gray string tie would also work. Any more style would make you an irresistible chick magnet, and all the women standing in front of you would interfere with your playing at a gig.

Is that big white nylon screw the bolo? If so, you need two big white nuts on the ends of the strings. We want to hear some of the comments you've gotten about the big screw.
BTW, I like the Indian artifacts. Out to see the Flint Ridge site a while back. Have a string tie with an arrowhead on it somewhere. _________________ 1974 Marlen S-12 1968 Tele 1969 Martin D-35H |

If Buddy Emmons could wear a derby, then I'd say this hat is a safe bet.
I have a Stetson pretty similar to it in gray. _________________ Mark |

Glen,
It's actually bright yellow. Found it when cleaning out a heating duct. Some kid musta lost it. The blue bolts were on collar tips, which I can't seem to find right now. I have a somewhat "wooden" stage presence, as I always concentrate on playing at my highest level possible. So I compromised by adding odd things to my clothes or guitars. Made string ties all the time! Here's my bestest! Found the stone on the beach in Fla. It had holes worn through it, so I painted it bizarre pink and turquoise, and put flashing leds in the holes, and a battery pack in my pocket. This one really caught people's attention!
The hatchet heads, scraper and arrowheads were found by my Welsh, coal miner Grandfather 100+ years ago in Southern Ohio. He ended up owning the coal mines! |

That's actually more of a saxophone-player hat... but go ahead, steel guitar, especially pedal steel, is in need of paradigm-stretching. _________________ New FB Page: Lap Steel Licks And Stuff: https://www.facebook.com/groups/195394851800329 |

Gentlemen:
Thank you for all of the replies, some informative, some interesting, some scary!
I have to often switch 6-strings on and off between songs so I may end up not normally wearing a hat at all. Just curious as to etiquette!
I'll let you know what the reaction is if I decide to wear this one! I may just stick with the "Steel Guitars of Canada" baseball cap.
Cheers,

Michael ...
How about a toque from Tim Horton's?
Not quite a cowboy hat, but certainly shows Canadian pride.
