Hi,
In my continuing quest for better steel guitar tone I was about to spring for a Hilton volume pedal (nearly $300 delivered), but after a phone conversation with sacred steeler Chuck Campbell I purchased a Morley Mini Volume/Wah ($89, free shipping). I may rarely use the wah feature, but it is only $30 more than the straight Mini Volume pedal, so what the heck.
When Chuck suggested this pedal my response was that I have had a full size Morley Vol/Wah for years and hated it because the travel was so short. He assured me that I would get used to it. And I quickly did. In fact I like the economy of motion. By the way, Chuck has owned a Hilton for years, but prefers the Morley.
Like the Hilton, the Morleys do not use those tone-sucking pots. There seems to be some slight loss of tone, but much, much less than with my Ernie Ball or Dunlop pedals.
The Morley uses a 9-volt battery, but that's no bother. And I really like the small size--makes a feller wonder why we have been using those big pedals all these years.
If you want to minimize tone loss and don't want to spend a fortune and deal with a pedal with a power supply that must be plugged in, I recommend the Morley Mini pedals. I am very happy with mine.
Best,
Bob |

Hi Steve,
Thanks for the info.
Upon reading your post and the thread you linked I tried my Allison and Sierra with no volume pedal, the Mini Morley, and the Ernie Ball. I cranked up both guitars to a pretty loud volume level.
The only noise problem I had was with a fluorescent light bulb in the room. Of course, this problem existed with no volume pedal in the line, as well as with both pedals, both guitars. The problem disappeared when I removed the bulb.
The Sierra uses an 18K George L pickup, which is a 10-string pedal steel pickup. And Chuck Campbell plays a pedal-steel (he has 5 or 6 of them).
As for the control/travel/taper issue, the Mini Morley works for me. But I probably don't use it in the same manner as most pedal steel players.
Interesting...
Best,
