This is for my new 427PW Telonics Pickup. I've been tweaking and re-tweaking and this is my personal (ear) pole settings for now. It's a 12 Universal, but the first 8 strings should apply to 10 string. The 9th string is a B. I got all of the raspy or sizzle out of the first 4 strings for a smooth tone. And, the bite (hair) into the remaining strings.
Tone adjustments (# of turns each pole) are keyhead row listed first and changer row listed second:
1= 1.25up 1.25down
2= .75up .75down
3= 2.25up 2.25down
4= 1.75up 1.75down
5= .25down .25up
6= .50down .50up
7= .75down .75up
8= 1.00down 1.00up
9= 1.25down 1.25up
10= 1.50down 1.50up
11= 1.75down 1.75up
12= 2.00down 2.00up
volume adjustments (both rows up or down together):
1= .50down
2= .25down
3= .50down
4= .25down
5= .50up
The remaining strings sounded balanced in volume to my ears. I used the corner of an index card to pluck each string for volume adjustment. And, used my picks to set tone.
Strings 3 and 4 changer side poles will be slightly below the surface of the pickup.
Thanks Dave Beaty for the extra help in explaining the adjustments to get where I wanted to be. _________________ 1976 Birdseye U-12 MSA with Telonics 427 pickup, 1975 Birdseye U-12 MSA with Telonics X-12 pickup, Revelation preamp, Carbon Copy Delay and Hall Of Fame Reverb, Crown XLS 1002, 2- 15" Eminence Wheelhouse speakers, ShoBud Pedal, Effects Pedals. 1949 Epiphone D-8. |

Interesting that your first string is out of order in the gradual slope of the strings....and that your third string isn't higher than it is, given its weaker volume...
Mine are sloped completely in order of pitch...can you describe what led you to the out-of-order slope for string 1? _________________ https://www.lostsailorspdx.com

I set the volume first. I found that the volume settings were only audible to my ears on the first 4 strings and had a gradual slope. Then, I performed the tone settings and got rid of the, what I would call, raspy sound. Then, I went back through the volume adjustment proceedure and found that it needed to be re-adjusted. Maybe the volume changed when the individual posts were brought closer to the strings during the tone adjustments? I don't know, but that's what I was hearing. I kept tweaking them slightly as I went back through the whole proceedure again. It took several days. But, right now I'm getting a nice mellow tone from my high strings above the 12th fret. And, the wound strings have some bite to them to balance with the plain strings. However, I thought the 5th and 6th plain strings needed a little more bite and ended up with them requiring a slight more of the changer end pole adjustments up and keyhead poles down.
I'm probably not "totally" finished, but I'll play it for a while like this and run through the whole proceedure again. I don't expect any drastic re-adjustments, maybe a 1/4 turn here or there. I have some tracks to do at a studio next Saturday, so I'll have a chance to listen to what it sounds like played back to me in a studio setting.
As I look at the poles closest to the keyhead, they "look" like a gradual decline in height in string order: 3,1,4,2,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12. So, the tone adjustment heights must come into play in the visual slope? It looks right? _________________ 1976 Birdseye U-12 MSA with Telonics 427 pickup, 1975 Birdseye U-12 MSA with Telonics X-12 pickup, Revelation preamp, Carbon Copy Delay and Hall Of Fame Reverb, Crown XLS 1002, 2- 15" Eminence Wheelhouse speakers, ShoBud Pedal, Effects Pedals. 1949 Epiphone D-8. |

I have some 408s on order for my MSA. Thank you so much for taking the time to post your findings, it should help anyone looking to set up these pickups. |

Dave Beaty will go out of his way if you have questions or problems.
I'm sold on the pickup and tweaking results. And, it's dead quiet.
I also adjusted the pickup about a dime thickness lower than the recommended height when I was finished tweaking it to compensate for the height of the 3rd and 12th string pole height. So, I might be outside the recommended adjustments, but it sounds great to my ears. _________________ 1976 Birdseye U-12 MSA with Telonics 427 pickup, 1975 Birdseye U-12 MSA with Telonics X-12 pickup, Revelation preamp, Carbon Copy Delay and Hall Of Fame Reverb, Crown XLS 1002, 2- 15" Eminence Wheelhouse speakers, ShoBud Pedal, Effects Pedals. 1949 Epiphone D-8. |

I just received my pair today. First impression at home volume is really good, will try them tonight on a job and make my observations regarding what and where to adjust , but will wait till I put on fresh strings , after an outdoor job on Sunday. The folks at Teleonics were great to deal with, outstanding customer service. Can't wait to dial these babies in. |

Dennis this is the same pickup I'll be getting on my new Williams, can't wait. Dave was really great to work with on choosing the 427 and he said if I didn't like it he would exchange at no charge. You can not beat that. |

Dennis,
Are you stating that the first eight strings of your U12 are similar gauge to the first eight of a standard E9 string set?
I'm looking for a starting point of reference . Thank you again for contributing. |

Yes, first 8 are the same as standard 10 string. My 9th is a B, then G# E B. I tune my 2nd string to C# and raise it to D#, but that should not be an issue. _________________ 1976 Birdseye U-12 MSA with Telonics 427 pickup, 1975 Birdseye U-12 MSA with Telonics X-12 pickup, Revelation preamp, Carbon Copy Delay and Hall Of Fame Reverb, Crown XLS 1002, 2- 15" Eminence Wheelhouse speakers, ShoBud Pedal, Effects Pedals. 1949 Epiphone D-8. |
