Scotty's Music has audio/video clips of some of their used steel guitars at http://www.scottysmusic.com/steellist02.htm I thought it was pretty neat being able to hear what some vintage (and newer) non-pedal steels sounded like. Novices (like myself) may find it useful to actually see the correct way to do slants. A note to the non-computer nerds: You can save these clips on your computer by clicking on the "File" tab of your Windows Media Player and then click on "Save As". I hope Scotty's keeps it up. I'd love to have a mini reference library of lap steel clips.

Wow!
What a revelation. I'm going home tonight to shoot my bar because it won't do slants like that!
Seriously, I am going to have to stop using the flat one that came with my first lap steel and get something like the one he was using on the Frying Pan.
Anyone know where I could get one in the UK or by mail order?

Cheers!

Man, whoever that player is sure makes them all sound good! Judging by the video clips, the Gibson Ultratone sounds as good as an Excell S-8! There's a lesson to be learned here...

Dave, you should be able to pick up a nice bullet-nosed bar from the same place (scottysmusic.com). Look under "Accessories" and there will be a link to Steel Guitar Bars from there. I've had good luck with the Dunlop Jerry Byrd Bar (the smaller one - #919). Your mileage may vary of course.

Best regards

-Bill

The guy in the videos is Don Curtis. He sells, teaches, and does repairs at Scotty's. Also writes some instructional material. Nice guy, good player.
