I started this on my lap steel and have done the same on my PSG. Just take a simple lick you know well and play it with your eyes closed and just listen. If it comes real easy just start adding voicing and passing chords, it is a eye opener, no pun intended, (maybe a little).
I realized a while back that I can pick up my strat and play most anything without looking, but with the steel I was straining my eye balls. What it did was give me confidence especially changing grips between chords. Give it a whirl and let me know what you think.

Or just try practicing blindfolded. It will turn out not as hard nor as bad as you'd fear

A few nights per week I like to practice with the lights off in the dark. Playing along to rhythm tracks.

I've tried this and like it, I just need to do it more often (I figured I was the only one weird enough to do something like this!). It has the added benefit of giving you the confidence of being able to play passages on dark stages.

I tried the lights off and it puts more pressure on you as it is not as easy to open your eyes and cheat.I was doing this the other night with scales on my Dobro and was amazed the next day how the confidence in getting the proper pitch let me think ahead to the next chord or move. Reece Anderson always says the farther you can think ahead the smoother your playing will be and this helps a few of us.

Drills and practice exercises are interesting and beneficial. Joe Wright mentioned years ago that he often held and twirled his bar and wore his picks while watching TV. So I guess you are practicing without practicing?
