Some of you may have seen John Widgren's post about the T&C Steel Guitar amp from FYD Amps.

Got me thinking about the possibility of just the pre amp so I contacted Dan Lurie and he agreed to do it. It will have the same controls as the T&C Volume, Bass Mid, Mid Shift, Treble and Presence, and when the tweed circuit is activated the tone controls are bypassed and the presence knob acts as a master tone control. So on paper it looks like the tone shaping flexibility of the Peavey preamp we've all been using forever, but with octal tube goodness. It'll be in a two rack space unit, and while I didn't get an exact price yet, it'll be under $800.
Be a couple on weeks before I get it, but I'll post pictures/ review after I give it a spin. |

there are new production octal tubes made by Sovtek.
Dan Lurie is a great amp builder. If you are going to go for an amp built with octal tubes, he gets my vote. Very knowledgeable and knows how to make a reliable amplifier (or preamp, in this case)

The new production tung-sol octals are really quite good. I have four of them that I've been beating up for a couple years and I've never heard so much as a squeak or hiss from any of them.
Dan can also do a two space preamp with tube reverb, based off his twin reverb preamp but with the T & C tone stack. My T & C is still going strong. More than I can say for my minivan that we named it after... |

Wow...If that preamp is anything at all like my Town and country, it will be a killer! I am not dogmatic about tube amps, I own both solid state and tube amps and love em both. When I want a tube amp, I only want my FYD Town and country. It is unlike anything else out there, incorporating the best attributes of 5B6 type octal based amps (simple tone and volume) and boutique blackfaces, but with SS rectifier (great for snappy steel) full tone stack and a mid sweep control. 70 loud and clean watts powered by KT88 power tubes which are head and shoulders above 6L6's or 6550's for steel guitar. You can also roll preamp and power tubes, no problem. It's not just another Fender clone, definitely it's own special thing.
All in a compact and very reasonably priced lightweight package. it is sick good.
Dan Lurie is a pleasure to work with and aims to please. A straight up amazingly talented good guy.

| I had the opportunity of trying Jack's preamp out yesterday at Dan's. I had it going through a wet reverb and my Mac power amp. It sounded (and felt) fantastic! So loud! Even with the lower gain 6SN7. |

6sn7 gives a warmer tone in mine,6sl7 give a little more bite and volume. |

I recently acquired two converter sockets that reduce the 8 pin octal phase inverter and 8 pin preamp octal to use a 9 pin 12AX7 preamp tube. I find the standard Octal tubes break up too soon in a tube powered amp.
Not knocking any amp mfg. and just voicing my opinion but my unit makes a better guitar amp than a steel guitar amp for the way I play. |

Well, I just put in an order with Dan for a T&C preamp with three knobs; volume, tone, and reverb. I only use the tweed setting on my T&C amp anyway so we'll just do away with all that extra stuff. After demoing both Jack's preamp and Dan's Twin reverb preamp I'm sure it will be great.
*edit* Looks like it'll have a reverb tone control as well.
You really can't go wrong with ordering an amp from Dan. His builds are really high quality, and his asking prices are more than reasonable. Also (and perhaps my favorite part) he takes players' feedback very seriously and does whatever he can to achieve the sound you describe to him. |

Been meaning to post my thoughts on the preamp, but 've been so darn busy..
REALLY lovin' it. Warm, fat, but clear and detailed. The tweed mode alone would make me happy, but the mid circuit really gives me a ton of control. Lower mids and bass are full, round, but tight and defined. Plenty of chime on the top end, but none of that glassy shrillness I associate with a Twin. The upper strings on the E9th response like they're fatter (I know, sounds weird). Airy is the term that comes to my mind.
Running it through a Carvin T-100 tube power amp and two Eminence EPS-15 speakers.
Very happy with Dan's build. He was also great through the process, and open to ideas.

I've had my Octal Reverb Preamp for a few weeks now and have been reeally happy with it. http://www.fydamps.com/photo2_3.html
It has five control knobs on the front... vol, tone, (and for the reverb) dwell, mix, bright. The dwell knob is really useful for getting a heavy reverb sound without the overly noticeable springy trails.
There is also a master volume on the back by the outputs which is very handy. I've found that the McIntosh power amp I'm using has it's own sound - and a slightly different inherent eq curve from the preamp's. The master volume lets me get the volume I need after balancing the sound of the pre against the power amp. It's a very subtle thing, but nice to be able to play around with.
Perhaps the best and most unique thing about it though is the completely dry pick attack no matter how much reverb there is. I don't notice any change in tone or loss of clarity even with the reverb cranked.
ps... I ran the preamp straight into the front of my '68 bandmaster head for an all guitar gig and it was kind of amazing. Crank the pre volume and turn down the master and you have Keith Richards tone. No kidding, this thing is great. |

Dan how many tubes would a basic preamp have? Treble, Mid, Bass, and volume would be enough knobs. Can you PM me a ballpark price?

The preamp has all the same controls as the Town & Country amp. They are Volume, Treble, Mid, Mid Shift, Bass and my Tweed control. There is a switch to select the Tweed control. The Tweed control bypasses the other tone controls but there is some interaction which provides some fine tone control. When the tweed is inactive it acts as a master tone control.
The preamp has a master control on the back to better match the output control to the input sensitivity of your power amp. The has a 6SN7 but a higher gain 6SL7 can be used as well. Most like the warmth of the 6SN7 best.
