My wife shared this picture with me today.
Edited to add Keith's caption:

First time ever playing a pedal steel... how hard can it be?? -KU |
Edited also to add my opinion: I took his comment as strictly tongue-in-cheek.

Has anyone ever heard a steel guitar in any of his music? Just curious. Maybe we will if he's the one playing it. _________________ Zum Encore, Zum Stage One, Fender 2000, Harlan Bros., Multi-Kord, |

The only one of his songs I can think of off hand that has prominent steel is "But For the Grace of God." |

The steel player on Keith's first record was Paul Franklin. Keith's songs "Your Everything" and "But For The Grace Of God" both feature great steel by Paul Franklin-Keith plays guitar on every song |

Keith's very first record was titled "Keith Urban and the Ranch" ... was released in 1997 and re-released a few years later on the Capitol-Nashville label. The re-release was simply titled "The Ranch" and there is one track with steel titled "Man Of The House" in which yours truly was asked to perform the steel guitar duties. _________________ www.BuckReid.com

On the CD titled, 'The Ranch' (Keith's version of the Dixie Chicks hit,'Some Days You Gotta' Dance' is featured here), the tune,'Man Of The House' has some tasteful playing by Buck Reid...Sorry Buck, you and I must have been typing at the same time (great playing by the way).

There's a radio lady named Lia Knight and she is one of my Facebook friends. I told her that I play pedal steel and then she told me Keith Urban wanted to learn to play steel. |

He's always seemed very interested in Pedal Steel. Several of my bosses have tried their hand at it. _________________ www.BuckReid.com |

Let us not forget that Keith had his early formative years growing up here in country music clubs.
During those years, he was backed by many steel players including my tutor Winston Black among them.
I'm sure Keith knows their value & would do a fine job on steel if he wanted to! (with practise naturally)
G'day Keith, cheers from Oz!
I have early photos of you in those days - but I can be bought off, with the right inducements.
Only jokin' mate! |

Keith's first single after he won starmaker here in Australia was a release with the ABC country label
and I played steel on that session. Also had to play (But For The Grace of God ) when he sang it on the Australian Country Awards show. I was part of the House Band. Paul's steel parts on that song is fantastic. |

Keith was a star even when he was a pimply kid ! At a Caboolture CM Festival once he tried to buy my 79 Anni Stratocaster (jokingly) - I was doing backing. He must have been 14 or so but he knew a good guitar then and could play really well too. The audience loved him. _________________ Priebs GFI ('09)Short-Uni10. GFI ('96)Short-Uni SD11. ('86)JEM U12

Appears to be from the days before Pac-a-Seats. I've seen that guitar before.. Also, do I spot an Echolette over on the right. Joachim, you especially should recognize it..

Very nice playing by Buck Reid and Paul Franklin on those cuts. Buck's website is pretty cool too. It was so kind of Keith to allow steel on 3 of his songs way back in those days. _________________ Zum Encore, Zum Stage One, Fender 2000, Harlan Bros., Multi-Kord, |

Barry, I'm to young at fifty- nine, for having played on stage in the sixties, but I spotted them very often when I went to concerts in our area. Here's a real veteran who's kept all his gear from those days. The unit you pictured is the tape echo NG 51 used in combination with a microphone amp at 1:35 in this vid.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qnloev6mlV0
The bass player in our band also still plays over an old Echolette. _________________ Fender Kingman, Sierra Crown D-10, Evans Amplifier, Soup Cube. |

Can anyone tell me more about the Chief's guitar that Buddy is holding? It's a strange one - L-5 neck? tailpiece, round hole thin body single cutaway arch top, (L-4?) with an arch top pickguard. It has popped up two or three times here in photographs in the past week and I can't seem to find out anything about it using internet search engines.
