I like how they do the original Leon McAuliffe changes on the bridge, VI I II V, instead of the Jerry Byrd changes, VI I VI I II V.
Everyone I play with always does the Byrd version with an extra 4 chord and quick 2 to a 5. I'm always telling them it only goes to the 4 chord once, then a long 2 to the 5.
The long 2 chord, like on the original Panhandle Rag, gives some dissonance and tension in the melody, that's just missing on other version.

I wonder if Merle Travis wrote these lyrics, like he did for other instrumentals of the time?

Joaquin cut two versions (different solos) of NPR with Smokey Rogers. I know I have one here, and I think the other got swiped out of my car since it was in the CD player the thieves seemed to desire.

Both versions had the bridge as
Tab:
IV-IV-I-I   IV-IV-V-V

The solos are some of the best Joaquin ever. I'll try to post what I've found.

Herb posted while I was typing.
What I hear on the bridge in the Webb version posted is
4, 4, 1, 1, 4, 4, 5, 5
just like what Herb posted.
I'm not hearing a 2 chord. Confused

Your right Web does do the 4 instead of the 2. I think I've got to where I just always try and hear the II that now it's there in my mind all the time.

I still like the II, even though I think I do have one of the Joaquin version Herb is talking about and just anything Joaquin did was great no matter what the changes are.

I am going to try to get in touch with Kyle Rhodes. His father, Bobby C Rhodes, traveled with Web Pierce for a number of years. He will more than likely be able to fill us all in on how the tune was played on the steel. Bobby C Rhodes carried his S8 Gibson Console and a Sho-Bud when he traveled with Pierce.

Kyle Rhodes also has some wild stories from his father about Web Pierce and his antics, good and bad.
