I just came across another great video on Youtube of a song from a Happy Goodmans concert with Jack Smith playing steel...

I just love this one, and thought I would share the link.... Smile

i just wish i knew what become of that purple sho-bud.
it must be a good story about that guitar, but, where is it now?
jack smith was a fantastic addition the that era of the happy goodmans......
of course, everybody was a key piece to that puzzle.

country.....

that clip is a good illustration of a point many people miss in their (which steel sounds the best) quest for good sound.
this was played on a sho-bud and sounds great. i could hear john hughey playing similar stuff on an emmons...or a zum.
i'm sure most well built steels today could get the same job done. what is so cool about this clip is the 'placement' of the notes and how they support the vocal. it's 'what's being played' rather than 'what it's played on'.
the more people understand this, the less need for threads about the unanswerable question, 'which steel sounds best'. the answere is, 'the one that the guy is playing the best music on!

there were a few licks on records at one time that i couldn't swear for sure if it was buddy or lloyd. it was just beautiful tone create from the soul of the player.

I'm filling in for Jack tonight at The Hitching Post in Apache Junction, AZ.
I believe Jack said he and his brother are going to his Mother's birthday celebration tonight.
Bless your heart Jack. Very Happy

Thanks again guys for all the kind words. That purple Bud was magic. Shot loved the Goodmans so much that when I joined them he built it for me staining it purple as that was their favorite color. When I went to work with Bill Anderson, Sonny's tone was so unmistakably Emmons, or at least that's what Bill felt, I decided to change to Emmons. Out of respect to Shot and his graciousness I offered it back to him. He loved it so much that he kept it for himself. I have no idea what happened after that but I did love that guitar. I wondered many time why I had to be honorable lol.

I'm having a great time living in AZ. Playing 4 nights a week and doing pro tools recording most of the rest of the time, while running our business and raising my 2 youngest grand daughters, 8 and 3 years old. I'm a blessed man. Stay in touch.

Hi Jack,

It's great to hear from you again, and that you are still playing the steel. Was interesting to read about your experience with that Sho~Bud, it sure had a great sound. Wishing you all the best. Marcus

I have stated here on the forum one of my favorite records was the Happy Goodmans "Wanted Live" album recorded in St. Louis. Jack is all over it and sounds great. I believe it was in 1971 and there were no effects. You ever get a chance to hear the album you will be blessed.

I'm listening to the Goodman Band "100 Miles Out Of Nashville" album this morning at work (it's a slow day) and Jack did some great playing on it. Their version of "The Lighthouse" is the best I've ever heard. Jack, if I remember right, you were still in your teens when this was recorded? You had a great touch and tone even back then, and I'm sure it's only gotten better.
