The JERRY BYRD FAN CLUB has just posted a great instrumental by Jerry. It's entitled "Ridin' High".

Well that is something different by Jerry and I enjoyed listening to it...Thank You !! If you could listen to this clip for me and tell me if it's Jerry or not. I have thought for 60 or more years it was Johnny Sibert but in the comments section someone says it's Jerry and the more I listen, the more I think it is Jerry with Louis (sp??) Innis.

With a high degree of confidence I can tell you it's NOT.......JERRY BYRD.
With a lesser degree of confidence I can tell you that it is most likely Johnny Siebert.
The problem is, Billy Robinson and a host of other steel guitarist were in Nashville at the time, each vying for a shot at the big time. I know Billy did three or four cuts with Carl Smith and in later years, Jerry Byrd did several albums and a number of singles with Carl.
But I do believe you're correct that it's Johnny. |

I had no idea that I had ANY KIND of "weird obsession" with my mentor JERRY BYRD. I simply recognized at a very early age that this man had something special to offer thro' his music and I wanted to grasp as much of it as I possibly could.
Does it bother you or what is your point? |

so wouldn't all your adoration/obsession of him be better served in the non -pedal section

This is the Steel Players section, not the "Pedal Steel Players" section. And if Jerry Byrd wasn't a steel player, then I don't know who the @#$& is. |

Jerry Byrd was a steel player,I met him waaaay back at the ISGC,forget what yr.And for the record Mr.Montee is also a steel player & a very good one too. |

Hi Ray,
Don't pay too much attention to those stupid and derogatory comments from some "fellas". Jerry Byrd is truly the "Master of Touch and Tone" and you are doing a great job of honoring his music and memory.
As for the new clip, I am really not sure if it is JB or Johnny Siebert. Jerry was such an influence on many players of the era, which shows in their playing from time to time. Just saw a few Chris Scruggs clips on YouTube recently and thought that he also had studied Jerry's music carefully.

With all this talk about "discouraging beginners" and whatnot, I must say that any time I have asked Ray Montee directly for advice concerning steel guitar technique, he has been very generous and detailed in his responses and has given me much valuable help. At times, he's made some comments about my steel playing that were not exactly of the "atta boy, sounds great!" variety... but you know what? He heard some things in my playing that I wasn't noticing. That made me examine what I was doing more closely. Sometimes we need to be "encouraged"; sometimes we need to be told that we could do a better job. Inability to deal with that severely limits musical growth. |
