I have an old Altec 421 bass speaker of my late brother's.

Would this be worthwhile reconing and using in an extension cabinet for steel?

If so, should I use a cabinet with a back so that it could also be used with my small GK bass rig?

the 418b altec would be a better choice, but if you get it done on the 421, talk to your tech about a thinner paper cone than is called for in a bass speaker. also an aluminum voice coil cover will give you some more top end. a good speaker recone tech can mix and match voice coils and spiders and cones to meet your sound preferences.

Although the Altec 421 is a low frequency speaker, it does already have an aluminum dust cap. I had one many years ago in a guitar amp. I loved it! Punchy and clear, and had plenty of bite when I pushed the amp.

I suggest you have it reconed as a 421...don't change it. Then try it out in your rig. If you don't like it you can sell it, or trade it, for something you do like. Just take a look at Ebay to see what a 421 is worth.

Tone-wise, the 421 will take anything a steel can throw at it.

Most every amp I have (and use) has a bass speaker, even though none of them are bass amps! Whoa!
