Need help w/Fender Deluxe 8 w/Trap PU

I just got ahold of one (my first Fender steel!), and it distorts when I play fairly hard. When I push down on the trapezoid pickup, the distortion goes away. Any suggestions?

Steve, look in the end of the pickup and see if it appears warped, the bobbins on some of those sometimes get warped and need a rebuild, if not, sounds like it might be a short, possibly the winding where it comes out of the bobbin shorting against the pickup casing which should be an easy fix.
