Howdy Neighbors, Does anybody know who the steel guitarist was on Marty Robbins first couple of albums. I'd heard that it was Herb Remington. I love that sound, maybe it was a non pedal steel. Tennessee Lee

When Marty (Martin David Robinson) moved from Glendale, Az to Nashville, he took his local steel player with him; the late Jimmy Farmer. Jimmy did some recording as well as personal appearances with Marty for a long time.

Was the steel player useing a pedal steel or non pedal steel on his first two albums, The song of Robbins CL 976,- Marty Robbins CL 1189. I think these two albums were in the mid 50's Anybody know? T.L.

Me too Chet. Marty was the best! Yeh, They are great albums. I love that crying sound they got out of the steel guitar. Jimmy Farmer huh, I never heard of him. I'll have to look him up. Thanks guys for the info. T.L.

Lee...
I tried to locate Jimmy a couple of years ago; I have been the steel player for the Marty Robbins tribute shows in Arizona for the past 10 years. I thought it would be great if we could get Jimmy to come appear and maybe play. But my search found that he had passed away in Florida a year prior to my search. Disappointing to say the least.

Jim Farmer played a 2 neck Fender guitar that had 1 pedal....I would guess it was the E to A change. It sold on e-bay a few years back. You can see him playing on the so-called 'Tribute' videos from the 50's.
Farmer was the steeler on 'The Song of Robbins', 'Marty Robbins', and 'The Song of the Islands'. I believe that he quit the road around the end of the '50s.

Jimmy Farmer didn't move to Nashville until Marty had been there several years. Something to do with problems getting into the musicians' union. He recorded and toured with Marty, and then worked in Marty's office for many years.
Joe Vincent played steel on several Dallas sessions and he was the steel player in Marty's band until he left in 1954 to join Faron Young's new band, the Country Deputies.
Jack Evins also worked with Marty, in 1953.

| It is a shame that the younger generation will never hear the greatest voices in country music, they dont even have a clue. Marty and his band with James Farmer,and latter Bill Johnson and others, also the great Jerry Bird,Marty had the best Voice Quality that i have ever heard, even though i love Ray Price. Wynn Stewart,Faron Young, Buck Owens and so many others, The world would be in better shape if their music was on the Air today. rather than the no talent stuff that is there now, Just my opinion. We are losing all the greats. and the execs of today don't even know it, new country will never replace the country that i knew.Chet |

WOW, Those were the days. I started off in 74 with a single neck Fender eight. Wished I still had it. Anybody know what kind of steel that is in the picture? Looks like a Fender. T.L.
