Tonight I sat down to my guitar and played a bunch of George Jones. After I dried my eyes, I thought that his music touches Steel Players in a very special way, and it isn 't just the subject material, for me it was the whole package. Maybe it is just me that he reached this way?

George Jones is the reason I picked up the steel guitar.

Now that I think about he is a major factor in why I started playing a guitar 45 years ago. Cool Daniel, I can see it.

My favorite George Jones is his Musicor era stuff, Niels, though I love it all. That's probably around the era that got you hooked , too. His voice is like a steel guitar, the way it bends, slides, and the emotion that he draws through. It's amazing to think of how those old sessions were organized, the sheer number of recordings and the amount of music that he and his people put out. I collect and listen to those old vinyl records and I can get lost in the richness and the spontaneity. I like to listen to things where all the instruments are given their own space in the stereo field, but I also really like listening to them the other way, and get more of the composite effect of a single unit where the sounds are more woven together. Those recordings are magic. I can't say enough about old George's effect on my understanding of music and how much he has enriched my life. George and Sonny Curtis' work on "George Jones Sings the Songs of Dallas Frazier" left me no choice but to let go of the Tele and go for the pedal steel. I haven't had this much fun or been this excited about playing in a long long time.
