A Boss GE-7 or anything similar will do. That's supposedly all that's in the other boxes.
Setting a 7-band EQ in a zig-zag pattern gets you pretty close. |

The Match Bro's are king and they use a 10 or 11 band EQ. After hearing Joey Ace's Match Bro demo, I gave up on using the 7 band EQ solution. It would be nice to have the dobro and reverb function built into a volume pedal!

| It's partly a question of how much it's worth to you. I had a Matchbro and bought a GE-7 for comparison. The Matchbro was clearly better, but it cost @$200 used vs $40 used for the GE-7. I had to weigh that against how often I use the effect in a given night (often not at all), how much anyone can hear the difference at high volume gigs, space in my overly crowded pack-a-seat, and the fact that both have equally bad hiss, which is an issue at low volume gigs. I went with the GE-7 for my needs. But if you plan on using it one or two songs a set and play in an environment where the tonal difference can be appreciated, the Matchbro is worth the dough. |

Bob, I don't know... soon it seems.
And Bill, I agree with you, The thing is, amplified (pickup) and many miced acoustic resos don't sound anything like their glorious acoustic selves, or like a reso with a nice condenser mic in the studio. The best of the simulators carry a good bit of the EQ vibe, and some of the hollow "point" that identifies resos in a lot of listeners ears. I see them as a different kind of effect that puts an electric lap or pedal steel into the EQ realm the Dobro occupies. Once you get used to the difference from a great acoustic reso sitting in your lap, it's a really fun, useful sound.

I look at the simulators as giving more of a Pedabro vibe than actual Reso ... I have used the Goodrich Matchbro for years, and I have an 8 string Catcan with the build in Sim as well - 2 slightly different beasts.
I also have a dobro simulator in my Telonics Pre1000 which is very cool - and has taken the place of the matchbro.
Nothing really compares to my Beard MA6 with the JD Fishman Aura setup for reso stuff though

I tried a 6 band and a 10 band, and it wan't the same. the zig zag pattern means you start with the first (lowest) slider all the down, the next all the way up, then down, then up, etc.

I've used the orig. MatchBro and the BoBro with good results. Either one will get you a reasonable dobro tone. If you use multi-fx units, with a little patience you can program in a good reso patch as well.
For a more believable approximation, use a lap steel tuned to dobro G or open G. The tuning and technique sans pedals with one of these sims is as close as you can get without an honest to god acoustic reso. |

I stagger my faders into the "football" shape pictured below, though you might try experimenting with a more extreme zig-zag or "comb" pattern (up/down alternating) and find what sounds best to you.

I already explained it above. The good thing about using the EQ, is that you can fine tune the sound. I had a honk in the low end (I use a lot of bass on my amp), and found that lowering the second slider to half got rid of it, but still kept the dobro sound.
By the way, I use the Danelectro 7 band eq. $30 bucks at all online music stores. Don't waste your time looking in the San Jose big stores. None of them carry Danelectro stuff. Behringer also make a cheap one that is available in some stores. I have heard reports from some who use them and say they work just fine.

My Danelectro isn't noisy at all. Not that I can tell anyway.

I've got a GE-7 and it was quite noisy (hiss) till I installed the Monte Allums upgrade.....now quiet as a mouse.

...but here goes.
I am playing through TCE M-One XL effects unit that has a kajillion presets...and infinite user-input possibilities.
However, I have yet to find any presets or manual settings that give a dobro-type sound. Can somebody help me out? What do I need to do to this thing?
It would be nice to just switch over and get what we all need. (FYI: my amp is Walker SS)
