I travel to the west coast (from NJ) for work several times a year, usually for several days, and often find myself thinking about practicing on the road. With the development of guitar interface adapters (such as iRig) which can be used with an iPad, the possibility of taking a guitar on the road is not as crazy as it might seem. I take my headphones for the plane anyway. Trouble is, I've got some heavy guitars, like my Sierra and Ricky B6. I'd be curious to learn what guitars others may have used for practice purposes when traveling. Thanks! |

Check out the Lone Star E'Lite. Weighs about 26 pounds in the case, 23 pounds set up.
I flew mine home in the overhead bin of an MD80 from Dallas.
There is a web site. Send me your e-mail and I will send a couple of pictures.

Marvin - Thanks for your reply. I guess I wasn't clear: six string lap steel is what I play, so that's my search. I'm thinking of taking my Magnatone Varsity on a trip to L.A. in a couple of weeks. It's light and has a hard shell case, and a pickup rewound by Jason Lollar. Maybe I've answered my own question... |

That guitar will be perfect, Ralph. A Roland Micro Cube would be a good little travel amp to go with it, too... |

Thanks guys. What got me started on this was my purchase and use of the iRig ($35 or so), which, after downloading a $14.99 app, allows you to turn your iPad into a reasonable facsimile of a Fender Twin Reverb (or other Fender amp), with an interface cord that weighs a few ounces. So all you need is a guitar, cord, iPad (mini works too), the interface and headphones or a small computer powered speaker. For the past week, I've been playing the Magnatone through this system as a test, and I think it just may be worth whatever hassle might be involved... |

How about a Washburn Rover, comes with a high bridge insert (need a nut extender) and a great travel case and has pretty good tone, use it for travel, beach, wherever....no need for any electric doodads...about $160 _________________ https://www.lostsailorspdx.com

Steve,
That's what I got and I put a pickup on it so I could run it through an amp. |

Believe it or not, I usually travel with my D8 Stringmaster. It fits in an overhead on Boeing and Airbus aircraft. I usually have to haggle with the gate attendants, but it works out in the end. I have a Roland mini amp I stick in my suitcase. I check the suitcase and carry on my backpack and steel. That way, I have the C13 and B11 tunings that I use. I've also travelled with my short scale Fender Deluxe 8, which is even smaller. When I travel with a resonator guitar, I'll put it into a hard shell case, check it, and carry on my suitcase. - Jack _________________ Jack Aldrich
