Topic: GFI or Mullen? Opinions Appreciated |

I recently sold my Pre RP D10, thinking that I would eventually replace it with an SD10. I don't foresee having enough time to learn C6.
Anyway, I love the Mullen sound, and the fluidity of the knees and pedals. Compared to a previous steel from another company, the Mullen seemed so much more refined and smooth.
I'm considering a Royal Precision or possibly a GFI Ultra. The GFI is on my list specifically for weight. Are these steels in the same league? I really want the Mullen, but traveling from my house to the church (primarily the two placed I'd play) is all stairs. Lots of bumps and bruises on me and the walls! I don't want to sacrifice sound and playability for weight...
Any help would be appreciated. |

I'd put them in the same league, but lighter weight will feel different.
I'm still waiting for a guitar that's 35# in case and as substantial as an MSA Classic _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)
More amps than guitars, and not many effects |

Between those 2 makes, you might consider the Mullen Discovery if you only want one neck and a lighter pkg. Advertised as having Pro Mullen build, tone and feel that you're used to, but in a more compact unit. |

Doug,
I agree with Jerry. The Discovery plays just like the RP. It sounds al little more like the G2. I have sold a few of them and am really impressed. They are truly a professional guitar in a light weight package. I know the GFI is a great guitar also although I'v never played one.

i played a mullen pre RP recently and own a GFI ultra and an expo.
the mullen seemed made a very worthy impression on me and the mechanics were really smooth and precise. sound also very sweet.
on the other hand i still like my GFI s for sounding very keen imO especially with the truetones in `em.
they`re light and extremely reliably so i don`t feel like i`m needing another brand.
but again: the mullen is great
