I have a Peavey Nashville 1000 that I use at home for my practice amp. It has started cutting out on me. I will be playing and it will just go out. I give it a smack and it comes back on but I don't want to keep doing this. Anyone have any experience with this?

Try cleaning the input/output jacks with something like Radio Shack electronics cleaner. All of the jacks, loop send/return, preamp/ power amp, etc. Even if you don't use them all.

That helps the older-style Peavey amps, not sure about the NV1000.

There are plenty of molex connectors inside... these need maintenance also.

Here's an idea... open the amp, set it up (extension speaker wires necessary), play it until it fails... then take a Sharpie or other non-conductive probe and tap *carefully* around the amp until you find the crackly place... there's your culprit. Probably somewhere around the loop jacks, either effects or volume pedal loops.

Put Caig De-Oxit on a paper notecard, business card, or matchbook cover, get it between the contacts, and rub it around... this usually fixes things for a long time. Follow with Caig Pro-Gold to fix it longer. For Molex, take the connector apart, re-tense the contacts (tiny screwdriver time), spray Caig product, then put back together and grind them together somewhat... break up the oxidation.

I have fixed two that had poor soldering on a red male multi-pin connector on the power amp board, at about the center of the board. Poor wave soldering was at fault. A bit of pain to get out and repair, but fixable.

First check the preamp out/power amp in as well as the pre and post EQ effects loops jacks by using a short jumper cable from preamp out to power amp in, or loop out to loop in jacks.

A wooden or plastic chopstick works great for this.
Keep one hand in your pocket.

Also, check the power cable itself! It can come loose and unplugged from the chassis fairly easily.

Have jumpered the Pre and Post EQ loops with a guitar cord? Also the Preamp Out/Power Amp in on the back of the amp? There can be an open "normal through" contact on the return or power amp in jacks.

Hi Jack...and thanks for comin' through once more for me!! Very Happy

Have just reassembled amp after cleaning jack sockets and molex connectors....all working at the moment, but only time will tell!!

This problem has persisted since I bought the amp, (cheap!!) and I'm only just getting around to sorting it.

Had the same exact problem with mine. After several years of trips to the shop and twice to Peavey I had given up. Then I found a great amp tech here in Austin who found a microscopic bad solder point.
Working great as my practice amp these days and so far so good.

Audiotech on South 1st St in south Austin. Jack moved down from Boston a few years ago, where he was a tech for Aerosmith. Be prepared to hear some stories.

The Reverb has stopped working on my NV1000 - is this likely to be the Molex connector oxidising too ???? I haven't had it apart yet.

Hey, thanks Arty... always looking to keep up with the scene here. I just met Chris Forshage today, what a neat guy... got him working on my Cajunborn. He recommended Billy Z (*not* Billy Zoom!) as a good amp tech... then looked at his website... no longer taking repairs! They get good, then start making custom amps, then no longer do repairs... seems the way of it. I'll drop in on Jack sometime and see what he's up to. Up north, the guys at Vintage Guitars are good... and I just learned about a new shop near Furniture Hell (Burnet/Anderson) called Austin Guitar House... looks like a winner (Asher dealer!), try to leave the wallet at home!

You might find the springs rolling around in the bag... no substitute for digging in, although you can rock it back and forth and listen for the springs to tell if it's that far gone. Molex, RCA, tank... probably one of those, less likely to be a blown op-amp or cold solder.

The Nashville 1000 (and Nashville 112) does not have a "Molex" connector. It uses a different type and has not really been a problem.

I would look at other things, such as a flakey connection at the reverb pan or some other electronics issue.
