I have been trying to digest some of his work. I feel a lot of his compositions lend themselves to steel guitar. His use of accidentals kind of trips me up along with chord extensions, but it keeps me struggling. Anybody else been down this path before and want to share some thoughts?

Mike Perlowin has recorded some Bernstein on steel guitar. Perhaps he'll stop in here to comment.

After I bought Mike's "West Side Story" I got interested for a while. A lot of Bernstein's music is bombastic, comedic, all sorts of other things that can be annoying when sang - Hollywood mushudramady gives me a brain rash, but than can be cured by instrumental-ONLY treatments. I found another instrumental version of "West Side" by the French piano sister duo Katia and Marielle Labeque, and that makes it easier to listen to the choices that various people make when working through a version of any of his work. There's a lot out there, mostly jazz instrumental.

The version of "Somewhere( from West Side Story)" that I like is the Tom Waits version.

Mike's version is very nice, but not my style. I enjoy his work.

As has been mentioned, my entire 2nd CD is the music from West Side Story. There's not much I can say about it, except that my personal favorites from the CD are "Tonight Tonight" and "The Dance at The Gym Medley.)

There are various selections from the CD on both my web site and my soundcloud page. I hope you guys all visit the sites and check out my interpretations of the music.
