Here is my new guitar - whaddya think?

OK OK - here's how it looks now...

I decided I wanted an old single neck Shobud. Bob Hoffnar was kind enough to find me a really nice '73 6139 3 x 4 where he lives in Austin, TX - thanks Bob! The guitar is great and came to me in very decent shape but of course as is to be expected it is still 40 years old - so I started fixing little things on it here and there. I wanted to move the knees over a little and I found out the additional knee components were made by James Morehead. I contacted James and he has been amazingly helpful and encouraging. Next thing you know (as these things can sometimes progress) I have taken the whole guitar apart and under James' EXTREMELY generous guidance I am on my way to a refurb. James was kind enough to share his knowledge and time with me - I can't thank him enough. I'm almost finished and I couldn't be happier!

I took the guitar completely apart, rejuvenated the lacquer finish and cleaned, polished and waxed most of its parts - with special care paid towards the changer (which really needed a good cleaning). I am finishing up a few little things still - I am polishing and cleaning the raise and lower springs. I'm also going to smooth out the grooves in the finger radiuses. I thought it would be fun to post pictures of the refurb at this point. While I'm at it I just got a nice arm rest from Don Blood - really beautifully made. I will post more pics when it's completely finished including of the undercarriage. It's very empowering to be able to do this work. I can't wait to see and hear the difference the refurb has made in the action and feel for this guitar.

Ian,
That a beautiful old Sho-Bud. You've done a great job on it! I can see the tone dripping off of it from here! Very Happy. I have a friend who has one almost exactly like yours, but I can't talk him out of it. Smile

That steel is looking super, James has been helpful to me as well with my marlen. He's exceptionally knowledgeable and has been a great mentor.

Thanks guys. I just got it all back together and I can't believe how great the guitar feels and sounds now. I'm very happy with how it all turned out. It's been fun.

And yes Edward - James has been real encouraging - and he sure knows his stuff!

Awesome work Ian! Thanx for the kind words--it's fun helping with these sort of projects. Ian, give me a call this evening, and I'll help you with final touches.
