I recently purchased a Roland cube80 and I like the amp alot. Since it only has one channel, I still have my problem of it handling both steel and guitar...right now I switch out the cables from steel to guitar and have to adjust the tone, volume, which is time consuming and not the best situation, i dont think. So what do you guys do...use an equalizer and run both into that before the amp and set each...any advise is appreciated...i really dont like to drag around 2 amps, but thats the way i have been doing it.
Thanks in advance. |

|
|
The Roland Cube 80xl is a two channel amp with only one instrument input....you could set up a good sound for guitar on one channel and steel on the other and use an A/B switch for the instruments. Then you would only need to push one button for the instrument selection and one for the channel selection on the amp. I still found this tedious and wound up getting another Cube 80xl amp since they don't weigh so much A great little amp....wish it had two inputs, one for each channel. |

Larry,I think a lot of it depends whether you play six-string standing up or sitting at your steel. If you sit to play six string, you can get by with one channel. The way I do that is first to EQ the amp for steel(in my experience, optimum steel EQ makes six-string sound muffled and bass-heavy).
The six-string signal path is: guitar to a small graphic EQ set to compensate for the amp settings to one side of an A/B box to the volume pedal to the amp.The steel signal path is steel to the other side of the A/B box to the volume pedal. If you have effects and want them to work only on steel, put them between the steel and the A/B box.If you want them to work on both instruments, put them between the A/B box and your volume pedal or in the effects loop if the amp has one.The VP will also work on both instruments, which I like.Volume swells and slowly increasing volume for sustain as a note attenuates do nice things for six-string.
If you stand to play six-string,you just about have to have a two-channel amp like a Twin Reverb or Tim's luscious looking creation. |

I use a DOD A-B box with steel volume pedal to one side and guitar to Fulltone Fulldrive
Into the other side. I have the amp set clean and use he overdrive pedal to boost volume and add some grit as may be necessary. The A-B box is quite old. I'd guess that some company still makes something like this. _________________ Justice Pro Lite (4-5), Justice D-10 (8-5)x2 , Quilter Steelaire, Hilton Pedal, BJ's bar. |

The Telonics PRE1000 Preamp has got 2 separate channels -- works perfectly for having a 2nd instrument on hand and ready to go without having to adjust anything. _________________ 14'Zumsteel Hybrid D10 9+9

|
|
Fender Twin Reverb, w/JBL'S, and I'm splitting it into 2cabinets. I have the cabs built, now I'm waiting on the Tolex, and grill cloth to get here. That son of a gun is like lifting a big ole block of concrete! But some places I play, I just don't have room on stage for a Pro Reverb, and a Session 400. |

There is no need to use another amp and the setup is not complicated you just need a Roland FS-6 foot switch
The cube 80XL is a two channel amp but you also have a SOLO where you can store
a preset for each channel this actually gives you 4 channels
I use the Cube 80XL and I'm very happy.
Here is my setup
I use a Radial Big Shot AB/Y pedal with the steel in one input and a planet wave guitar cable that has the circuit breaker switch built in.
I also use theRoland FS-6 Foot switch.
I set the amp for steel on JC Clean then store that in the preset solo
I set the Lead channel for Tele and store that in the Lead solo
I set the JC Clean for Dobro
Now with the FS-6 foot switch I can select between JC clean/JC clean solo/Lead solo and Lead.
That gives me 4 presets to choose from and I only need 3.
I could get by without the planet waves cable buts it's nice to know the signal is off when I switch Tele and Dobro |
