Im stuck between whether I want a 7/8 or 15/16 12 string bjs hughey bar for 10 string pedal steel. I think a 7/8 would be faster than the 15/16 but my concern is that the 7/8 would not produce as warm of a tone on the c6 neck. When i watch/listen to some steel players like emmons, jernigan, herby wallace, Im wondering what size bars they used. I have a regular 10 string bjs 15/16 bar and i like it. I have large hands and so it fits my hand better.
How many have a "special c6 bar?"
If you were me and were choosing only only 1 bar for both e9 and c6 would it be the 7/8 or 15/16? _________________ Keenan Friday

I have never tried the 15/16 bar. So I can't be sure. But the reason I haven't tried is that I'm totally satisfied with my 7/8 bar. I only play C6. No E9 at all. _________________ Amor vincit omnia |

I use a 7/8ths bar on both necks. My hands are not big enough to effectively control the bigger bars. Plus I don't feel a need for any more sustain. |

I think I've checked out most of the bars and sizes, both at home and on the job.
I use the same size for both E9th and C6th work.
That being said, I think BJS bars are outstanding. As for size, I cut my teeth on a 7/8" and no matter how I try to get used to a larger one, I keep coming back to that. It's just my personal preference.
I've paid close attention to any tonal and sustain differences between sizes and for my technique and ears there hasn't been much. Oh, maybe the larger sizes give a tiny bit "more" but not that much. Again, that's to my ears and with my technique. I'm sure others have had a different experience.
I do use a Tribo-Tone bar for maybe 15% of my playing. It is really quiet and fast and it has a good warm tone. I haven't used the "other" synthetic bar that I've read about that a lot of players are using now. I'll have to try it. |

You should be able to use the same bar equally comfortably on both necks. For me, it's 7/8". |

I agree with Jerry. I have tried both sizes and really can't tell much difference in tone (or feel for that matter). Now, I have tried 1 inch bars, and that is quite a difference, but the 1/16" difference between the 7/8" and 15/16" is so small I doubt you will see much difference. Like was mentioned, if it is comfortable to you, that is what you should use. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . I have played D12 steels since the mid 60s and I have been using the 15/16 bar now for about two years and it is the best bar I have ever used. I use my 7/8 bar on my non pedal 12 stringer. _________________ Carter D12, MSA S12, 12 String Custom Made Non-Pedal, Evans FET 500LV, Evans SE200, Peavey Nashville 400, Fender Steel King |

I have many bars, from 1/2" all the way ip to 1 1/4", but I always go back to one of the 7/8" bars.

My experience is that a larger (heavier) bar may add sustain, but that it does little for "warmth". What I do notice is that the initial attack isn't as clean with a larger bar, so if I use one, it's only on slower stuff. |
