Need help. Lot of confusing info out there about my Dobro. I would like to know what I have.

Hound Dog Square Neck, f holes. Hound Dog decal. On end of the head are engraved following - D4071770. On the back of the head is a sticker with this number - 311490641.

Would appreciate the following information - is it an OMI or a Gibson, what year it was built, and what model is it.

Thanks.

Bill

Hi Bill,
I am not an expert on the serial numbers but if it is an Original Houndog., built about late60s.....early 70 s by the last of Dopera brothers. It wouldn't be considered OMI then because I think the copyright was up and one brother built under Hound Dog.
I think Gibson got it subsequent to that and it sounds like you might have a Gibson
I have a 68 Hound Dog so I have done a little research.
I am sure there are more folks out there with information but I am fairly sure about the limited number of early ones.

Thanks, Gary. I should also mention that it is an acoustic electric. The invoice says it is a Gibson Hound Dog, but the serial number D4071770 indicates to me that it was built in 1970 (70) and it is wood (D). If that is correct, then I need an explanation of the other numbers. If not correct, then I need an explanation of all the numbers and the letter along with an explanation of the second set of numbers on the decal. Bill

Wrong. Gibson made, 90's to current stock. Later ones made in China.
OMI never made anything that said "Hound Dog."

I'm afraid you're wrong Ken - OMI made Hound Dog branded instruments from 1967 to 1970 during the years they had lost the rights to the Dobro name when it was owned by Mosrite. In the mid 1970s, they again used the Hound Dog brand for a series of Dreadnought flat tops. The Hound Dog name continues today under Gibsons ownership.

I stand corrected!

But that probably ain't the guitar we're talking about. The newer Hound Dogs are everywhere, and the originals must be quite scarce. I suspect a picture would help clarify the situation. But if the invoice says "Gibson Hound Dog," I'm not sure any further clarification is necessary.

I don't think any of the early Dobro or OMI Hound Dogs had stickers on the rear of the headstock. My guess is that it's a recent import. I don't know how to decode modern Gibson ser. #'s but you might be able to find out by visiting their website.

The Dobro numbering they show after the Gibson acquisition is a bit confusing and to further compound it, I believe there were both US and import Gibson Dobro Hound Dogs.

About 20 years ago, there was another low-end model that had the Hound Dog logo on the front of the headstock, Dobro lyre decal on the back. OMI, pre-Gibson.
