Hello,

I'll be in Hawaii this april/may. During that time will be the HSGA Steel Convention.

http://www.hsga.org/register-honolulu2013.htm

Actually I don't really know what to expect, is it worth going there?
Are there only concerts or also workshops?

Any input would be appreciated!

Greetings from Berlin

Sebastian

Aloha Sebastian,

I will be going.

Since, 1985, I have been to all of the HSGA conventions in Hawaii except one, which occur every other year. Each and every one of these are enjoyable. We are from all over the world but we are one big Hawaiian Steel Guitar family (ohana).

Your coming should offer you a lot of different experiences. It all depends on what you want to experience. There is the music, the food, sight-seeing the beauty of the Islands, plus other varied experiences such as cultural and historical. But the most enjoyable experience for me is meeting new people from around the world.

One experience is going to the convention for three days and hearing steel guitarist from all over the world. Half of the participants are from the USA and the rest are from other parts of the world.

Another experience is the May Day celebration in Kapiolani Park where the performers from HSGA perform as well as other venues.

In the evening, we visit various spots in Waikiki and the Windward side (Honeys) to enjoy Hawaiian steel guitar from the local professionals.

When you get there, you can plan according to your wishes. There will be people to help you with your planning so that you enjoy your experience in the Islands.

I will look forward to meeting you.

Aloha no, Smile
Don

Seb, you'll be here when May Day happens so it'd be a shame not to attend the chance of the whole year you can hear more than one steel in an entire day in Hawaii. Whether it'll be worth traveling even two blocks to see..., let's hope so. The way it's been going the small talk amongst the attendees may again be the best part. Nice to see there will be a Waikiki Library show this year.

If you're in the islands in mid-April, Alan Akaka will be doing a steel guitar fest in Ka'anapali, Maui this April 19-21.

I will be going, along with Greg Sardinha and Bobby Ingano. Should be some work shops along with jam sessions.

Contact Alan for more info if you're interested.

Hi Derrick,

Alan told me about it. Unfortunately I will be only on Oahu and Big Island, can't afford another interisland flight 'Very Happy'.
But I guess going to the Waikiki convention and having some private lessons with Alan shouldn't be too bad either.

Aloha

I'll be there. I'm in Hawaii from 4/2-5/5, so I'll be at them all - HSGA, Maui and Lei Day. There is also the Maui Steel Guitar Festival in Ka'anapali the weekend of April 19. It'll be great - lots of steel guitaar wizards, instruction, jamming and hanging out with other steelers. Check out their website: http://www.mauisteelguitarfestival.com/. Oh - there's also the Abrigo Ohana kanekapila at Waimea Valley on the North Shore one of the Sunday's in the middle of the month that's fun to go to.
