I just wanted to comment on something that happened at the Dallas show. Jim Evans presented a pair of brief, 1-hour seminar Q&A's in Dave Beaty's Telonics room. Day 1 addressed some vital fundamentals of electronics, safety, power supplies, power amplifiers and troubleshooting. We had a panel of steel guitar electronics guys to share in the conversation and field questions; Dave Beaty (Telonics), Ken Fox (Fox Vintage Amplifiers), Scot Buffington (Evans amplifiers), Jim Evans (founder Evans Amplifiers, and myself (Sarno Music Solutions).
Day two did a bit of re-hash on electronics fundamentals, the vital importance of understanding the two states of electrons or electricity: static and electromagnetic. Jim also provided some excellent reference documents for transistor identification and shop safety devices. We also addressed the issues of preamplifiers and common repair/tech issues that come with them.
Jim tells me that he's been told that something informative and condensed and useful just couldn't be done, but it happened, and I think a good handful of people left feeling more informed and empowered. Personally, I gained a lot from Jim's getting back to basics and his overall tremendous grasp of the subject. It was also a great feeling to have the 5 of us gathered around the pure spirit of steel guitar electronics enthusiasm. We all are in it for the love of the subject, and that was really clear as we all hung out and discussed and offered our various insights.
So thanks again guys, great job Jim, thanks Dave for hosting it, thanks Ken and Scot for bringing your wisdom and experience, and thanks for having me there as well.

Congratulation to you all! I wish I could have been there. Living in Indiana just isn't conducive to making it out to Texas over the weekend.
I think it's great to hear about the "greats" of pedal steel amplification coming together for a common cause of educating the steel playing public.
Kudos! |

As a guy who can barely solder, I attended the seminar and was completely impressed with the entire presentation. Mr Evans just blew my mind with his depth of knowledge, and I learned a lot and could have sat there all day. All the panel experts were interesting to listen to and it is such a blessing to have these guys involved in steel guitar.
Hope to continue this yearly. _________________ '65 Sho-Bud D-10 Permanent • '54 Fender Dual-8 • Clinesmith T-8 • '38 Ric Bakelite • '92 Emmons D-10 Legrande II |

Brad, thanks for this post. I enjoyed participating in the two seminars moderated by Jim Evans. He is the only man I know that can herd cats. Thanks also to Ken and Dave. It's safe to say we all learned something about amps and perhaps more about mutual admiration and respect. |

I really wish it had been video taped so we could all benefit from the presentations and discussions. Oh well, maybe next time, eh? _________________ Best regards,

Hey Brad,
What I'd like to see done, would be for you to offer an octal mod for the Revelation?? _________________ Old Emmons D-10's & Wrap Resound 65, Standel amps!

It was a great time and a rare opportunity to get such a bunch of talented fellows together. I had not planned on the Dallas Show this year, but I got a call from Jim Evans and that changed my mind. I had helped two other years on the seminar and did not want to miss a chance to spend time with Jim E.
Jim asked that I get in touch with Brad and ask him to help out. Brad kindly joined us and added a lot to the mix!
I also enjoyed spending time with my very good friend, Scott Buffington at the seminar and also in his Evans Amp room at the show.
Jim and I had a chance to play in the Evans room as well (myself on guitar and Jim on steel). Well I quickly found out that this man of great electronics knowledge was also a first rate musician!
Again, a year to remember. Thanks to Dave , Brad, Scott, and Jim for another great seminar at Dallas. |
