I've recently picked up Tom Morrell's How the West Was Swung: No Peddlers" cd and Maurice's "Steel Playin' Texas Swing." Wonderful albums!! Can anyone recommend more non-pedal jazz? Western Swing is fine, but I'm looking more for straight-up jazz, or bebop stuff. Any suggestions? |

Chris, I haven't found too much straight up jazz non-pedal playing- but one of my favorites is Jimmie Rivers and the Cherokees "Brisbane Bob" featuring Vance Terry- Joaquin 2501. Wonderful live club stuff from California in the early 60's- Jimmie Rivers plays really incredible Charlie Christian-influenced straight ahead jazz guitar, and Vance is right in there with some incredible bop steel. Really great stuff. Chalker's non-pedal stuff on the Hank Thompson Records is pretty jazzy- and if you're looking for licks to swipe, I reccommend any of Emmon's C6 single note stuff for great bop phrasing- especially after he started listening to Pat Martino...

Rob Ickes' second solo CD "Slide City" was released in 1999 on Rounder Records (Rounder 0452). It contains jazzy tunes written by the likes of Herbie Hancock, Larry Carlton, and Miles Davis. He plays a custom Scheerhorn resonator guitar and does a very good job; it's a great CD.

Chris,
This may not be real 'Be-Bop" but my album,"A Different Slant" has Jazz chord solos on a 6 string Lap Steel. Tunes like, Misty, Moonlight in Vermont, Have You Met Miss Jones etc. All using 3,4 and 5 note voicings WITHOUT ANY SLANTS. If you want more info, e-mail me at thephotodoctor@mediaone.net |
