I am looking at an 8 string pedal steel, what would the most used tuning be for an 8 string with pedals??I know most 10 string are E9th,is there an E9th for a pedal 8 so if i wanted to upgrade to a 10 sting later ther would noy be too much of a change?? _________________ I have a Tele plus telecaster, Larrivee acoustic. Recently got a Sho-NUFF 6 string pedal steel in open G.Still learning. |

IMO, an 8 string E9 loses too much to have any relevance as a stepping stone to an E9th pedal steel.
Unless you want to play an 8 string pedal for itself, I'd steer clear of that axe. _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)

Thanks for the reply.I have been playin my lap 8string w/C6th and my 6 sting lap w/benders in open E. Just thought an 8 w/ pedals might be a good way to go. _________________ I have a Tele plus telecaster, Larrivee acoustic. What a lot of Fender 400 owners do is either omit strings 1 and 2 or omit strings 7 and 9. _________________ www.greatcityprod.com |

With the cost of a high quality brand new light weight 10 string as low as they are these days, I'd just go with a 10. However, my choice for tuning an 8 string E9 would be to do what Ian said. Assuming you have at least 4 knee levers on your 8 string???...I would lower the bottom E to D with the same lever that would lower your D# to D. Then lower the bottom G# to F# with the same one you would raise your 1st string with. What kind of steel are you talking, Fender 400? _________________ Zum Encore, Zum Stage One, Fender 2000, Harlan Bros., Multi-Kord, |

Your 8 string tuning will depend on the style you want to play.
Personally, I would go with an E9th tuning, minus the top two strings. That's what a lot of guys played in the 50's , early sixties. Jimmy Day, Tom Brumley, and many many more I'm sure. |

Dropping the top 2 strings would give you a 1950's copedent like J said, but if you took off strings 7 and 9 you can still get the low F# and low D with a lever, which are very nice to have. I see that you'll only have 3 levers, so for me anyway that would be a deal breaker. By keeping the top 2 strings you can have a more modern settup and be able to play a lot more of what you hear in the 60's music as well right up to today's music. _________________ Zum Encore, Zum Stage One, Fender 2000, Harlan Bros., Multi-Kord, |
