Anyone know of a source for replacement handles and mounting hardware for Fender steel guitar tweed cases?
Is it possible to remove the pin from the original mounting hardware to repair/replace the handle? If so, how?
Thanks
Jim Rossen

Micheal beat me to it bought one there last week.

I am lucky they are here in Tempe - they are having the Tempe Guitar Show in March there too.

For info see www.tempeguitarshow.com and come by and see steel seats there too.

I was also looking for a replacement handle for my Fender 1000 tweed case. I bought one of the aforementioned handles. The handle is for a standard 6 string guitar weighing at most ten pounds. It might be able to stand up to around 20 - 25 pounds. No way would it work for a heavy steel guitar. The stress is too much for the 4 screws that hold it onto the case.

I'm pretty sure no one makes a replacement for the old tweed style handles. With mine the leather wore off exposing the sharp inner steel part. The handle butterflies open, once the leather has worn off. I could not see a way to remove the pins so I cut a leather strap to size, applied some glue and then wrapped it around the handle. Looks like you did something similar and unfortunately I think that's the only solution available.

Came across handles from-
http://www.brettunsvillage.com/trunks/howto/parts/schandles.htm
item SCH24

Mounting hardware from-
http://www.brettunsvillage.com/trunks/howto/parts/suitcaseparts.htm

These look more robust than the AES handle linked above.

There we go! SCH24 looks like it might fill the bill. I'd have to measure. Bracket style #1 looks like it would work and they have hasp locks. Cool - thanks for sharing Jim!

Here is SCH24 handle and bracket style 2 mounted.
The fastener distance for the brackets is the same as original. I was able to reuse the original handle base plates and backing plates. The original handle posts needed to be cut to remove the base plates. The parts seem to be high quality. The brackets come with "patina". They look very good to me. The handle size would work with the original brackets, but the only way to remove the original bracket handle pins is to destroy the bracket.

I just bought a Epiphone Electar Lap Steel and case (1938!). The case's leather handle was broken and falling apart. I got a replacement here:

Nice selection of handles and hardware for cases.

All the best.
