I'm working on this tuning and I love it, I think its great for blues and country and Jerry Byrd used it for hawaiian.

I tune to (low to high) E.B.D.E.F#.G#.B.E

Im curious to know who use it and how, audio, some videos, lesson ect...

yeah, i use it - its a great tuning, not my main one - but i dont know how to answer your question.

i think of ANY tuning as
1 - a distinctive sound color/quality*
2 - a stack of intervals
i really dont think beyond that for better or worse

*... for instance, C6 would not be my first choice at all for biker bar blues - if i was forced into that situation, a dominant sounding tuning with lots of roots & 5ths would be better - E7 / E9 - (i would stay away from a 13 tuning)
if you are asking when i would use it vs another tuning - it would just be the dominant sound being the priority - lots of old tunes that have dominant cycles...simple 3 chord stuff. i think of C6 as more of a 'sophisticated' sound - the E9, more rootsy.

that E9 is perfect for country and its not hard to see the evolution of the pedal steel right there in the tuning
the best thing to do is track down a copy of Admirable Byrd (its out of print) - there was a vintage LP blog site with the LP ripped to mp3 - cant recall where. once you hear JB play it, you'll immediately hear the difference vs 6th based tunings.

The only lessons I'm aware of, and they are top notch - are Jerry Byrd "pro arrangements" available from Scotty's Music - lots of E9 transcriptions. That's really all you need together with Admirable Byrd.

This is an "a cappella" rendering of two old Hawaiian tunes ... Kaua'i Beauty and E Mama E ... Done in E9

They are done over and over ... I was demonstrating the various configurations of a pickup I made ...

Here is a segment of Surprise Waltz in tab ... Scroll all the way down

From watching this video of Jordan Officer I realized of much jamming a C# blues its a good way to learn the E9 tuning.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jDfLF9KBIwY

From the open strings and fret 2 you get lots of important notes in this key for blues

This is E9, although slightly different: E B G# F# D B G# E (high to low)

Really sloppy playing, I'll admit, but it was unrehearsed and I hadn't played it in ages.

This is also E9 (and F#9 tuning in the solo):

Wow - brilliant job on Wild and Woolly West Mike! I have been wanting to explore non-pedal E9, but I don't have a neck to spare. Gonna have to sacrifice something...

Most players use C6 with the 3rd on top these days. The intervals are identical. And that G# is generally considered a little too thin for general use. But there are guys who use it. The late, great Tom Morrell had a high G# string on his ten string E13 tuning.

Here's a transcription of "Surprise Waltz" from Admirable Bird I did a few years ago. I wouldn't say it's perfect but it is probably around the mark.

Hey Jean, my tuning is like yours except I don't have the D string in the 6th slot. I have my low B there and a G# on string 7... This way I can retune the 1st and 5th E strings to D# (Eb) and get a nice full B6th tuning with some good low string voicings. I love that low G# and couldn't live without it..........JH in Va.

Mike, maybe you can clarify which tuning Jerry Byrd used? Yours or Jean's?

I tune to (low to high) E.B.D.E.F#.G#.B.E

Has anyone used E9 tuning on a resonator guitar? I'm thinking of re-stringing an 8 str. to see what it would be like.

I've got it on one of my 8 string lap steels. It was a favorite tuning for Barney Isaacs and jule Ah See. If I had a triple neck steel, it would be the tuning I'd add to the C13 and B11 tunings I use. It's good to use on nahe nahe old standards. The 6 string version is featured as the first tuning in Jerry Byrd's manual.
